I am just curious about what everyone is using for dropshots now that they have been out a minute and most everyone that fishes one has what works for them. What length, power and action are you using? Along with are you using a casting or spinning??

I use a bait caster mostly. Me and spinning reels have a love hate relationship.

The ideal rod would be a spinning rod, so you can hook the fish in the top of the mouth. I however can't stand the fairy wands, so I throw them on a 7 foot medium heavy baitcaster with 10 lb fluoro. I have zero complaints.

There is no need to throw a drop shot on spinning tackle unless you just like using it. It works just fine on a bait caster, so it is up to choose which you like best. I use a bait caster for finesse worms and trick worms. Daiwa reels.

When your lure hits with water with a bait caster it will pendulum back towards you a spinning reel it will drop straight down with the bail open. Critical when you're trying to pinpoint structure or a ledge.

I have enough experience with a bait caster that I can pinpoint structure or a ledge to fish, I know where I need to cast too and I have more control with a bait caster than I do with spinning gear. I guess if you can't cast accurately with a bait caster like yourself, then it might be better with spinning gear. I can see where using spinning gear would be better for you. Its not the best choice for everyone.

Hard to beat the Falcon lowrider spinning rods for the money. Medium light or Medium depending on how much finess you need. I use the medium light on anything below 8lb. Typically use the medium with 10lb line. My absolute favorite dropshot rod is the one I have from reel time rods. It's a DS69 I believe. Not sure if these are still available though since the passing of the owner.
