Google says to use 20 to 30 lb braid for red-fish?
Would using my fresh/salt reels with 50 and 65 lb braid be able to catch Red-Fish or will I run into a line shy problem?
The reason I ask, is I have two poles I run with 50 / 65 lb braid for local fresh water catfishing. Can I use this same line set-up for red-fish being that they are also bottom feeders or do I have to change the line out?
Anyone with experience on red-fishing?

We use 20# braid for plastics on a 2500 size spinning reel. It's the best balance of castability and strength. If you're using the braid on a casting reel, you're fine on any slot sized redfish. Even a thirty pounder shouldn't spool you. ![[Linked Image]](https://i.ibb.co/tYRDW6Q/nice-one.jpg)

If you're fishing with bait a heavier line won't be too disadvantageous. You'll lose some casting dist, but given the cost of braid it's probably not worth re-spooling with something lighter. I do recommend a flouro or mono topshot or leader though. This will help if you scrape against jetty rock, bridge pilings, a pier, or oyster shell. 30 lb mono or flouro will be plenty.

I’ve got a few spinning rods with 65lb braid I use with bait at Braunig and Calaveras lakes for redfish. . Out of curiosity, a couple of years ago I put out 2 rods with straight braid and 2 with a 15lb mono leader on a few trips. I caught more than double the # of fish on the ones with the leader. It was enough to convince me that the 65 lb braid spooked them.

I made a simple decision in the end.
I'm going with (2) DC Shimano Reels and Shimano Rods and setting one up with #25 and one with #50. Simple enough and should have be covered in-shore, and cat-fishing both.

Anyone with experience on red-fishing? We use 40 lb on surf rods targeting bulls from the beach with bait. We use 65-80 lb targeting bulls from a boat. In clear conditions, we use 80 lb fluoro leaders. In muddy conditions, we often use 80 lb mono leaders or steel if there is a chance of toothy by-catch. But casting lures to slot reds in clear water is a different deal. I'd use a 17 lb fluoro leader and 20-30 lb braid, depending on the trade-off between casting distance and the need to pull fish out of structure.
