What top water baits is everyone using for stripers? I've been using a large spook. Throwing a large spook on a 7' rod from a kayak does wear me out a bit. Have tried the new Berkley lure with the tail that spins like a buzz bait. There's a bunch of those now. But they seem like hype to me. I haven't caught anything on them. Lot easier to throw but.. Was thinking about trying a buzz bait. What is your preferred top water for stripers?

I have not had luck, nor have I tried a buzz type bait.
I have however had luck on popper baits. Try downsizing on the size of the bait like a smaller pencil popper or even a pop'r.

I have seen buzzbaits work for striper when they are boiling. Buddy of mine did not want them flopping in his yak with tons of treble hooks so he threw a single hook buzzer. He did not catch as many as I did on my popper but I suspect thats mostly due to his limited casting distance. Buzzbaits are not the most aerodynamic things around.
Again that was fishing boiling fish. I suspect the ones and twos I can pick off on top with a popper or walking bait might not hit a buzzer as readily but in a good boil anything that moves along the top of the water will get nailed. They are not too particular in those times.

I have had good luck with a big whopper plopper. They will hit it on a steady retrieve but prefer it more erratic IMO. That said it takes less shoulder and arm to twitch a plopper than a pencil popper.

I tried the Berkley version os the WP. But just did a steady retrieve. Maybe I'll tie it back on and try a more eratic retrieve. Thanks.

If you’re talking about me at Willow Springs a few years ago - true, I don’t like throwing treble hooks in my kayak, especially with striper that do a lot of gymnastics in the boat. 😂 That was an epic day. Literally every cast. You caught more than I did, but my buzzbait held its own. Buzzbaits are my favorite top water and if fish are hitting it, I’m going to keep throwing it. Poppers are a little more difficult for me to work properly, especially from a kayak, but are probably preferable for top water stripers.

I used a saltwater spook JR a month or two ago and they would not stop eating it.

I am with you on not liking all those treble hooks... the sandies and stripers have no chill at all when you get them near the yak. Its sketchy. I bet in that same situation a small swimbait with a single hook burned under the surface would work well too.
