I don't make it to the coast very often and only see kayaks in the bay. Why not canoes?

Higher freeboard; catch a lot of wind.

I watched a guy try it in SA bay once, and it wasn't that windy, @15mph. He eventually gave up and walked it back in. Good river craft, lousy in open water/winds.

Every time we take a canoe out to Lake Fayette the wind comes up and wave splashing threatens to fill the boat with water. Although on most of the bays you could probably walk home if the canoe swamped in the four feet of water or whatever.

You can put splash guards on a canoe, but at that point you might as well use a kayak.

A billion years ago when I was in high school, and well before the kayak craze, I fished a canoe in protected channels and when the wind was low. Swamping is definitely an issue, but back then I was young and just flipped it back over and kept going. The canoe was great to hold batteries when we were flounder gigging. roflmao Using a canoe is an option, but if it was a good one I think you would see more canoes out there.

If I had one at my old age, I would have those outrigger side pontoons put on. Might help out with flipping.

I started with a canoe when I first went to the coast. What I had was an old town guide 16ft canoe. It was made from a material that made it unsinkable. It worked but not near as good as a kayak

Back in the sixties I used one a lot in the upper Keys. As I recall, I spent a lot of wading and dragging due to the wind. But itโ€™ll get you across the channels.
