How hard would it be to hit catch limits from the bank in Galveston or on the Gulf of Mexico from the various piers and jetties without using a boat? I have a boat, but live in Austin and with fuel prices it's too hard to get down there every weekend and fish with the boat. I have a little hybrid car I bought just for highway trips and I'm thinking about continuing to take weekend trips and just fishing from the piers and jetties? Most likely Galveston, Texas City, and Matagorda areas.

Bank fishing is very limited, WADE fishing is much more productive, but depends on what you're trying to catch.

When the wind lays sometime next month, the surf catches fire and you can load up, check the surf cams and see how clear/green the water is.

Might want to rethink your fishing areas, Rockport south has much better access to quality water than north.

Pat, I just seen your profile and it looks like you live along the gulf coast. I have a small bass boat with a 4 horse motor and an RV that I love to go camping / fishing on the rivers with. But I don't know of many spots where the water is calm enough that I can put my little bass boat in? Do you have any recommendations?

The reason I was looking for bank fishing and pier fishing spots is because of the gas prices to bring the camper and small boat down there. I would like to have some options where I can come down maybe 2 weekends out of the month in the car and the other 2 weekends come down with a small boat and rv.

I'm looking at Matagorda for the RV camping / fishing. Simply because I like the idea of the jetty park and free camping which negotiates some of the high fuel cost, not having to pay for an RV spot.

First, is your bass boat saltwater hardened? Painted trailer? Hate to see anyone ruin their toys by dunking them in the brine.

A couple of places spring to mind right off, you can put in at Charlies, halfway between Seadrift and Port O' Connor, you then can go up or down the protected intercoastal, or 200 yards into shoalwater bay, which is some really goods flats fishing.

Or Cove Harbor on south side of Rockport, you have quick sheltered access to miles of flats in Estes from there.

You can google map both of those and see what I'm trying to describe.

The rock groins/levees off of the Seawall on Galveston can be good when the wind lays down a bit. Be there early like before sunrise as there will be other fisherman(Mostly tourists) Topwater and plastics on a jighead. Free lined/popping cork live baits. Reds, Jacks, Trout, Flounder, Spanish macks, etc

Like Pat said, the intercoastal islands give a lot of shelter, not only from the winds, but from big waves. I launch my 14 foot aluminum skiff at Ransom Road launch in Aransas Pass, and can scoot all over the flats and marshes. From Matagorda South, there's limitless fishing area you could navigate in your jon boat. Just watch the weather, winds, tides, and other boaters. Aransas Pathways, a part of Rockport Chamber of Commerce, has a two-page county map with 17 kayak launches, and numerous boat ramps and birding trails. I'm sure they'd mail you one. From Austin, Port O Connor is closer than Galveston, without Houston traffic.

Do not overlook the Texas City Dike if you go to Galveston. FYI, if going on the weekend, you'll have to pay to get on the dike.

Just googled them and bookmarked them to my folder. I may give one a try up-coming in June. I just need semi-calm waters. I have no problems locally with my engine going up stream in the Colorado river. But the open ocean waters scares me. I'm hoping in the Bay I will be well off and still be able to do some good fishing.

I'm really considering going and financing a brand new Jet Ski that I would use soley for fishing off of. I have a Jet Ski also, but I don't trust it toating it all the way to the coast and being worried about it breaking down. Mine is a old 2-cycle banger. I'm thinking about just financing a brand new 4-stroke.

I've thought about the Texas City Dyke also. I also read that if you come in after 9 pm it is free. Can you tow an RV up on the dyke? And maybe roll in after 9 pm? I have an inverter generator, power, and water tanks on the RV.
