Gas 3/4 ton and one ton trucks are hard to sell, I know that for a fact.

I just got a 6.7 cummins diesel and I will never go back to gas engine motor. Not enjoying the 5.30/gal prices but I still will pay it to stay in a diesel truck

I have the 5.9 Cummins in my 98 Dually. No matter the make of vehicle or engine, they will all have their downfalls. That being said, my old Cummins has 324K miles on it and will pull a freight train that is carrying the Tundra that is pulling the shuttle at he same time. With diesel prices the way they are, I dont drive it unless I have to. I just had her turned up and tuned in, but she still only gets about 17MPG. But damn....that sound. Nothing else sounds like Cummins.

Nothing else sounds like Cummins. 5.9 was/is the most sought after motor. Talk about probably the best diesel motor ever produced, it was this one. The sound produced by the 5.9 is very distinct too, didn't even have to look for one, but knew one was in the area just by the sound they made. Many of my buddies had them and I was jealous of all of them back in the day. New 6.7 is pretty nice, and they are even better deleted but still not the 5.9.

I'd trade my 2000 5.9 for a new truck but not give money.
Once I put injectors in mine and added a little fuel it took away the turbo lag and it still gets over 22 mpg @ 70 mph. I do need to get the headliner fixed and an AC door repaired but other than that I like mine.
I bought a 2016 F150 late last year thinking to change to an automatic as I am getting old but the Dodge drives better for my taste. I sold the Ford and took the loss. My mistake.

I know several that have them with no problems but with the price of diesel and the new truck prices and needing DEF I would not get one. BUT I have a 99 F450 7.3L Power Stroke for heavy pulling and my F150 3.5L ecoboost is great for towing lighter loads under 7500 lbs. It is rated higher but I use the F450 for the heavy stuff.

So if you can find a pre-banned 5.9, and you WILL pay a premium for it, you'll be sitting in high cotton. Also, there was a 98 and a 98.5. The 98.5 was a 24 valve and they started going with electrical fuel pumps. The true 98 is all mechanical and with decent maintenance and care, should breeze past a million miles.

Had a 2016 f150 ecoboost, it was a lemon as many praise this truck. It was awesome until about 90K miles, plenty of power and towed everything I threw at it. I then got a misfire issue that I chased for about 2-3 months, went through new coils and plugs. Finally got that under control but still could watch on an ODB reader misfires continuing to happen but wouldn't put it in limp mode, just had to kind of deal with them. When it started the truck would go a week or two and then limp mode, tear into plugs and coils and would last a week..... this lasted 2-3 months. Even took it to 2 different shops and they were doing exactly what I was doing in my backyard, everytime told me it was fixed and just kept happening. The truck went through 3 throttle bodies, and super easy to replace but always sucked when I had to limp to an autozone to buy one when I was out hunting or fishing. Every truck I have owned, I have got 200-240k mi before trading in but this one I traded in at 120k mi. I am religious about oil changes every 5k mi and I always follow manuals on service recommendations. Never had any issues with any of my other trucks. They may have been beaten up, torn on the inside and raggedy looking, but always kept my motors super strong. I found my diesel in colorado and when I drove my F150 to get my diesel, I took spark plugs, my ODB reader, spare coils, and a throttle body just in case it didn't make it to the dealership. My girlfriend thought I was crazy when there was more car parts in the suitcase for the weekend than underwear but it made it and I couldn't hand over my keys fast enough.

I don't remember that they had a 98.5 designation but you are right about the change. They went from the 12 valve, P7100 inline injector pump to the 24 valve VP44 injector pump in the spring 98. When they changed to the 24 valve they also changed the interior, mainly the dashboard that remained the same till 2002 or 2003. The early 98 12 valve is easy to upgrade power on. I knew a guy who had a 92 that used his for hot shotting and his odometer broke at 780k miles. He estimated that he was well over a million miles on his. Those were weak until turned up. He said he struggled pulling his 8k trailer at 70mph. My 2000 has injectors, a mild fueling and timing upgrade and still gets the same fuel efficiency as it did when I bought it.
