My first go at an epoxy table, I used a Mesquite slab 2.5 inches thick. I planed the slab down to just over 2 inches and poured a 1/2 inch layer of gunmetal colored epoxy. After it set up for 24 hours I sprinkled on all types of loaded ammo including some WWII era 50 cal shells that I found scattered throughout the area I work at in South Texas. I then poured clear epoxy over the ammo and let it cure for 3 days. I re planed the slab to 2 inches and sanded the wood/ epoxy to 320 grit. Then taped off the wood and sanded just the epoxy to 2500 grit. I progressively sanded from 80 grit thru 2500 grit without skipping any grits. For the final polish on the epoxy I hit it with a very fine automotive rubbing compound and polishing compound with a buffer and 3 grits of foam pads which made it pop!! I welded up some custom sized legs out of 1â€x 2†rectangle tubing, size is 4’ x 2’

Looks great!

What did you use for the final finish?

Gorgeous work sir! I plan on making several things like that as well.

Tom,

The wood was finished with a two part oil finish called Rubio Monocoat. One of the easiest finishes I’ve ever used. Basically rub it in and wipe off the excess . It is really smooth and makes the wood pop without changing the natural color.

Very nice job. Which Rubio Monocoat did you use? I looked it up and there are more than one type available. Also how does it work on other woods such as walnut and pecan?
