If you think there may be scorpions, I would suggest you buy a black light flashlight. Go to the area that you think may be a problem area and shine the light after dark. The scorpions will glow neon green in the black light. I have a couple of the lights. It's fun to go on a scorpion hunt.

Everyone I know laughs about how stinging objects have sought me out my entire life. I have been stung by wasps dozens of times. It always hurt, but that was about it. Eight years ago I was mowing when something stung me just below the knee on the back of my leg. It felt like someone stuck an icepick in the back of my leg, but I never saw it. About ten days later I was mowing in the same place and I got stung again in almost exactly the same spot on my leg. This time it felt like I got shot. It hurt so bad I would have screamed the same profanities if Mother Teresa and Billy Graham had been standing beside me.

This time my upper calf got very red and swollen. By the next day the redness and swelling had moved around to the front of my knee. I went to my doctor. She gave me a shot of some kind and an antibiotic, and said the main thing I needed to do was make sure it didn't happen again, especially near my head. I had never had a reaction anything like that.

A year or so ago a red wasp stung me on the forearm, and my arm got swollen from that, too. Apparently I have developed an allergic reaction as I got older.

By the way, a few days after the second sting from what I am sure were yellowjackets I saw that something had dug up the ground right where I was stung and the honeycomb looking nest was on the surface and torn up. If I could find the raccoon who dug up and ate those $*&@!+?s I would treat him to a crawfish dinner and pin a medal on his chest.

Yellowjackets suck. One of my college room mates died at 47 of anaphylactic shock during a family bbq. He was stung multiple times on the neck and head an suffocated several minutes later. Although most likely too late, upon arrival paramedics tried a tracheotomy but his throat was too swollen. Watch out for yellowjackets if you are allergic...little bastards are no joke for some people.

I was playing golf one time , on hole #8 , addressing my tee shot when a yellow jacket got under my shirt and stung me three times . I reacted really quickly and tried to " smash " it , pulled out my shirt and finally thought I got rid of it . After I finish hole #9 , I decide to check out my stings at the clubhouse and take a leak --- little bastard was in my underwear --- thankfully it was dead . VERY grateful it was dead and didn't sting my pecker or balls

If he'd a nailed you on the ole tallywhacker during your downward swing, you'd a knocked that ball a quarter mile.

Red wasps hurt bad and so do yellowjackets. And Red Ants also but they usually leave you alone. Bee stings if allergic which I am!

I called it Diamond WP, couldn't remember the name until someone posted and pic. Demond WP is what I sprayed with after I got stung.

Thanks, Billy

Each wasp has a slightly different kind of venom and each person may react differently. As a kid, I did not react to insect stings (ants, bees or wasps) but when I moved to a foothill area I was hit by yellowjackets in my garden that left me with golf ball size swellings on my face. Later, when I moved to East Texas, I got bit my various ants and yellow jackets but the red wasps just knock me on my butt. They hurt like a red hot poker, make me dizzy and the bite area gets hard as a rock and the pain lasts for 7-10 days.

No telling what got to OP

Been stung by yellowjackets, red wasp, honey bees, scorpions and other critters that live on a farm. Bumble bees were by far the worst. Whoever mentioned being hit by punch is correct. Dang thing got me when we were picking grapes from a grapevine on the ground. Their nest was under the grapevine and 2-3 got in my long hair and went to town on my noggin. Mom took me to ER because I kept getting where I couldn't sit up in a chair, semi passing out. Hot summer day didn't help matters.

I was playing golf Saturday with a friend I have known since I was 13. A red wasp flew into our cart. He said he wasn't worried about it because if it was going to sting anyone it would be me. I attract them for some reason.

Take a black light in the shed after dark. If you have scorpions, you will know it very quickly. Little basssturds glow with a black light.

If you find scorpions in the shed, there is only one real answer….

Working outside, I have been stung by a lot of things, and for the most part it is just that initial shock of pain and not much else. But once I was unrolling a hise and much like you said (op), something I never saw got me in the hand. It was very painful and my thumb swelled up to almost being immobile. As I was going between staring g at my hand and trying to spot what got me, I noticed my bottom lip going numb. That had me a bit concerned but it faded before I could have gotten anywhere to get help.

I still have no idea what it was.... maybe a cowkiller?
