Gotcha: The Southwinds have been Brutal this Season on our N Texas Lakes & at times have been a complete pain in the you know where....well for me at least it has.Blowing on an average of 15-20mph ,and gusting to 30,makes it not only a pain but down right Dangerous to be on the water.I `ve been able to escape it`s Fury by seeking refuge in a creek or two at times during the spawn but the spawning season for the most part on the lakes I fish is over. SO ... that being the case,my question to you N. Texas hunters of these Denizens of the deep is "what Lakes in the N.Texas region offer the best ESCAPE from this Southwind BULLY? crying

There really is no escaping it. The only three options are stay off the water, get a bigger boat, or just tough it out. Even when the fishing spots are somewhat sheltered, I don’t know of many lakes that you won’t have to at least cross some rough water. If you launch and stay near a south shoreline you can get a little bit of refuge.

Like McKinney said it-no escaping it cause at some point you still have to cross some rough water. With that said, I always check the wind before I go(as everyone does I'm sure)-not only for speed/gusts but also for direction. I'll choose my lake accordingly and fish side of the lake which the wind is coming out that provides me with a dam, dike, etc that provides cover from wind. I have figured out that coincidently, areas with a good amount of artificial piles I've scanned on a given lake are usually targeted /dropped in these chosen places by crappie fishermen that have the same concerns about wind.

Well, just be ready to get out on the lake this comin’ We’d, Thur and Fri. The winds are gonna be quite Friendly. I’ll be out on the lake as soon as the rain is done. Wed thru Fri for sure, and Tue if there’s no rain. I just hope the crappie are still on the bridges.

At times had the foretrex dialed to 40/ 50 just to keep me in position. NOW the ride BACK was another story. Got nice bath, kept me coool. Just kept the B C nose up and took it easy. Prob gonna night fish some. May go this weekend when nighttine temps are less than 85. fish

cant think of a way to escape the wind, but I will tell you how I fish in it... instead of trying to hold the jig over brush or timber with the boat, myself and the rod moving up and down, I pitch the jig out and let it pendulum into the brush. it looks more natural to the crappie, because it is just falling thru the water column like a baitfish swimming by the cover... crappie like to hold inside or tighter to the cover when the waves are rolling, just waiting to ambush something going by. if its windy I have seen crappie move to the calm side of of a bridge piling to get in the eddy, waiting for something to come by..
having some extra weight in the front of your boat can help stabilize it some too.
forecasters are predicting a very volatile, windy summer, so we have to fish when we can.!

COMING SOON! .. THE STICKLE HOOK " the stay level sickle hook". sits level in the water with all knots.! Provides better hook sets and more natural jigging motion. No more adjusting the knot, gluing , or tying loop knots that cause the hook point to tangle in the loop, or worse knick the line.. The jighook that will make all others obsolete !

Bane of the kayak fisherman for sure. I'm confident I've got a summer pattern spot that would produce really well right now, but we can't seem to get a reasonably calm day.
