In two weeks and we have an Aft facing balcony. Just wondering what size fishing line to troll with and any recommendations on lures? I can't find any info on whale lures...

Trust your own instinct. Your mistakes might as well be your own, instead of someone elses.

couple of 14" squid on 150# braid, penn 9/0 senator and a 6' extra heavy trolling rod.

orca should be in season, feed the whole cruise with just one.

Its the "Crown Jewel" of cruises. I have been twice.

You wont be able to troll. But you will have a great time!

If you go to Skagway do the train deal to the Yukon. White pass or something? Its a blast. You will need a passport on you as they do go into Canada. But when I went it was not checked. Just asked if you had it.

If you stop in Ketchikan there are a few kayak outfitters who do a river to sea kayak trip. You're solo in a yak! They have a double option to pair up with kids or sucky paddlers. Its moderately challenging but incredible. Had an Orca breach 40 feet from me in the bay.

You can book these ahead of time direct with them and save 20%. They all know the cruise ship schedules and you will be treated just like those who booked through the ship.

If you have not ordered a drink package already and you are a drinker consider getting it as you board. They offer good deals and at $12 a beer... Well I plum wore them out both times based on my consumption vs. what I paid.

Have fun!

One other addition to Dan's degenerate Alaska Cruise tips.

They have single deck black jack for $5 min bets early in the evening. If you can play basic strategy and count Aces and Faces you can play for a while and stay about even or up a bit. Minus a tip or two to the dealer and waitress. Your already comped drinks bcs you have the package.

When it gets later in the night they will start to close those tables and try to get you to a $20 min. bet table with 6-8 decks. Do not do that. All in their favor then. Maybe just watch or go bet the pass/don't pass line on the craps table. Which will be fire by then!

This might not impact you as much since your going early in the year, but in the summer don't use the sun to tell the time of day. The sun was up when I was in the casino at 3am.

I went on a cruise once. If it's like the one I was on, there will be plenty of whales on board you can troll for.

The inside passage cruise on Holland America is the best cruise we've ever been on. Went out of Vancouver with stops in Skagway, Ketchikan and Juneau.

We took that train ride out of Skagway and it was great. Also took a whale watching trip out of Juneau and ended up seeing at least six humpbacks "bubble fishing" about a 100 yards in front of the boat. Great afternoon!

Canada has COVID vax requirements for foreigners so if you take the train ride take your COVID vax papers.

The Yukon Highway out of Skagway is excellent BUT when we went, Dad rented a van instead of the train or bus trip offered by the cruise. We went all the way up to Carcross at our own pace, stopped wherever we wanted, spent as much time as we wanted, all at a fraction of the price. I thought it would be the most boring part of the trip but it's still the part we talk about the most almost 15 years later.

HOW you react to what happens to you DOES!

So in our group part of them choose to do exactly that and they had a blast. They saw bears! We did not on the train. Really wished we had two days there and could have done both. But that rental and driving is a great option as well. Or the train. Cant go wrong either way.

And correction, the Kayaking from the river into the ocean that we did was not in Ketchikan. It was in Juneau!

Ketchikan we took a boat ride to the Fjords or whatever they are called. Was nice but a little underwhelming as they were not flowing due to a multi year drought they were having... that was only 18 months ago, they might still be having. Then in the afternoon just walked around and shopped which was cool. You will be amazed how many jewelers that little town has lol.

We saw a bear on the road, a moose that we stopped to watch (probably only 10 feet from the car), and a bald eagle flew alongside the car for a short stretch. Didn't get to do the kayak trips but caught a few salmon out of Ketchikan. The Sea Kayak out of Icy Strait Point is on my bucket list. Make sure to spend plenty of time on that balcony. Most beautiful views you'll ever see.

Also recommend visiting Red Dog Saloon in Juneau. Lots of history. Bring a business card for the wall if you have one.
