While there is no doubt Butch Brown is the man I would have to say Bill Murphy remains the GOAT. He literally wrote the book on catching giant bass.

Possible. Its a little hard to compare. Different equipment, different fisheries (often the same lakes, but they are not the same fisheries they were when Murphy fished them), different time BUT you can hear Bill Murphy in almost everything Butch Brown does and says. He is not shy about praising Murphy's influence on him.

They are kind of like Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi both GOATs and if they went it at head to head the outcome would not be certain.

Never heard of him, I had heard of Brown because of his largest bass every recorded cast to catch.

Butch Brown is a monster I saw his 65 pound five fish limit out of a pontoon boat like a bass buster one day

I would agree with your statements. I am sure Butch and Bill would both be top of the heap if Bill was alive today. No doubt in my mind that Bill would have not only adopted but mastered the large swimbait techniques that have put Butch on the map.

Excellent article. Looks like he hasn’t caught a really big one in a while. If he has room on his boat for it, wouldn’t be surprised if he gets live sonar to broaden his strategic options.

If you could shrink Roberts down to 4000 acres I bet I could pile up a few hundred 10lbers too 😆. Thats a big net too that he uses. That 19lber spit the bait at boat and fell in net. Butch is great fisherman and seems to be a great guy too.

not gonna argue the prowess of Butch 's accomplishments , but I will say that if you spent all your time fishing small lakes that stock trout , it's a different game .
There is a small Nor Cal lake called Coyote Lake . It used to stock small 12" trout once a week for over a decade . It became a place that would put out giant bass for anyone willing to be there the day they stocked it .It was common for guys to catch a couple of DD's in a single day --- all on trout type swimbaits . Teeners were very common . A local baitshop had a picture of a 14+ that hit a swimbait with the tail of a trout sticking out of it's mouth .
Now that they stopped stocking the lake with trout ---- nobody catches any DD's .
There was an article in Western Bass a long time ago on this lake .
