I'm looking at buying a used 12ft aluminum vhull boat with an electric trolling motor. Owner does not have any titles but I am assuming I will need titles and must register the boat correct?

It's not easy. If it has EVER been registered or titled, you need the owner's paperwork. If it was registered long ago, but you don't have the number, you can go to TPWD and have a Game Warden inspect it(look for a VIN number(($25.00))), and look up the number in their system. If it shows up, you've got trouble. If it doesn't, you can get them to give you an "assigned hull number", and they will probably want you to apply for a title, plus the registration. I've done this twice, and succeeded both times. To the tune of $80-100 dollars. They and the DMV make these things harder and more costly. IslandJim

I appreciate the feedback. I'm getting the feeling I should steer clear of this one. Apparently there's a reason he's had trouble getting rid of it and let me lowball him.

If you can find the TX nunbers or the VIN number, YOU can look it up on the TPWD data bank. The last 14 foot aluminum boat I bought(a 1958 Blue Star) had TX numbers, but they were for a 21 foot fiberglass boat 400 miles away! My next move was to take the hull ID info to the TPWD, and they didn't find it in their system, so they gave me a title and registration, for a reasonable sum. They WANT to register your boat, if there's no reason to refuse you. $$$$$$! You might get lucky, but boats are sitting in yards all over, due to the paperwork hassle and "lost title" scenario. The only person that can apply for a "lost title" is the person whose name is on the title, or an heir, after probate.
You'd be better off finding a boat with a title. Many old boats don't have titles, but they haven't changed hands legally in recent years.
Trailers are just as bad, but you're dealing with DMV, rather than TPWD. Good luck, IslandJim
