Off side hook set (or lack there of). I would have been cussing 🤬 and crying 😢 both. He probably did after turning off the camera. I know my heart kinda sunk seeing that giant come off sick.

I would do the same as my last Friday , I was throwing a Megabass 110 , having a great day --- hook into a bass that was easily 8+ , fought it really careful due the hooks were the original versions , she jumped twice and then after about 5 minutes ---just came off . I laughed because it was the only option

He never set the hook and tried to turn a big fish that was green with 6 feet of line out.

Just keep casting and learn from the experience

What would have done is I would have had a stinger hook on the back or a belly treble hook. I dont fish 12" swim baits but I do fish 6" and 8" and if I am fishing open water like that it will always have more than just that one single top hook.

Yup. Thats what the guy that shot the video said. I think he lost his bait that had the stinger, or something where it wasnt available....so had to use what he had. dude seemed knowledgeable, and like he knew how to set a hook....those big baits are just tough some times. But he did say he shouldve had a stinger, and usually does.

That video is unreal. If I never had seen it, Id never have thought a bait like that could get hoovered up like that! Heartbreaker for sure, but VERY good watch.

hit the thumb bar and let it take about 10' of line then set the hook.

Probably would’ve reacted the same way. He was in a tough spot - standing in a kayak, out of position, no leverage to set the hook properly, six feet of line out and the fish was moving behind him - when it was time to set the hook.

Sometimes it just happens, especially when kayak fishing. They get blown around and you’re out of position sometimes when you get bit. That was awesome footage, though.

If you were able to think quick enough in that moment to pull that off I would be very impressed.

This is the #1 reason why my drag is always lighter on cranks and swimbaits...let the fish pull me around if needed. However, he pulled the bait right out of the fishes mouth. If he hookset upwards he would have landed it
