I went to Lake Tawakoni yesterday afternoon and a friend caught this white bass, what is this growth on its tail? I've seen fish with red spots, but never anything like this!

Either a benign nerve sheath tumor called a neurofibroma or Lymphocystis, which is a growth caused by a virus. Would need to be biopsied to tell the difference. Neither are fatal. And yes, I'm a veterinarian.

I don't eat the tails, so it would have gone right into the box
