If you ever get to Huffsmith Texas, just outside of Tomball Texas, there is a place called Mel's Diner. Best I ever had. Go early. Place fills up.

People drive from miles around to eat at Bill's Catfish, it's just outside of Waurika Oklahoma. It's not bad at all, but it's not worth an hour drive one way to eat for sure.

Our neighborhood fish fries are the best I have ever had. I think the oil is what kills a lot of the restaurant's fried catfish. Fresh oil makes a huge difference in taste. Last time I ate fried catfish in a restaurant was Vaughan's on Lake Bob Sandlin. It was so bad I haven't been back in over 10 years. J.P., Vaughan's is good again. They sold the place maybe 12 years ago and it was BAD. It has been resold to what I heard was the family of the original owners and it is back to very good again. Give it a try again. We'll give it another try. I've heard a lot of people complain about their policy regarding getting a box for your food to take home. They said it feels like you are dealing with the Gestapo the way they monitor your leftovers. Hopefully that was the old owners. Don't know about that just that their catfish is good again. Since you can get all you can eat, I can see why they might be concerned about left over boxes.

Catfish parlor in Austin is the best restaurant I’ve had. I disagree with you there!!! Took some customers there and barely made it out of their parking lot before 'it' hit me. Took me 6 hours to drive back home (normally 3.5 hrs) because I had to make 6 - 7 pitstops along the way. I was 15 lbs lighter by the time I got home.

I've been noticing several places remove the word catfish and replace it with just " fried fish" or "white fish" on their menus. Makes you wonder what you are actually eating.

My back porch , 365 degree peanut oil , Louisiana fish fry mix with the blue label , Martha White hushpuppy mix ( add a can of green chilies) Catch them first thing in the morning , leave in the live box till lunch , fillet and get them in the oil while they are still twitching.

I need to check this joint out as I’ve heard about it from my buddies. Vernon’s catfish in Conroe was the bomb in the late 90’s. Another former great catfish joint was Catfish Village kind of on Lake of the Pines and Ore City, Texas.

Sams catfish on Division in Arlington is pretty good. Love those hush puppies slathered with butter. But there’s a couple of setbacks to going there. The whole joint smells like they just had an Avon convention. And you’ll never see anyone in there younger than 80. Which that may be the root cause of the Avon smell. Older women think Avon is top of the line perfume‼️

One thing I have learned , skinned catfish fillets curl when you cook then and have a greasy side( stronger flavor) Some folks like this. I fillet the fish with skin on , then cut the skin off , leaving a little flesh on the skin. These fillets will not curl when you fry then and taste much milder.

Pappadeaux hands down.
Flying Fish or Babe’s is second.
I don't go out of my way for catfish, might have once or twice a year. Didn't know that Pappadeaux even served fried catfish, I would never order it there, they have good sea food, catfish isn't sea food. But as Pat said, Catfish Parlour in Austin is good. For our South Texas friends, Clear Springs New Braunfels, and Catfish Charlies in Corpus has always been good to me. .

For me the Smokestack in Mingus has the best catfish I have ever tasted. A hundred miles from nowhere on the 20, but the catfish platter will knock you out. As I recall, the senior plate had 7 pcs of fish plus fries, slaw, beans and a piece of cobbler/pie or whatever dessert was on tap. going to Abilene tomorrow...I am stopping! Bet!
