10 year old 150 Mercury 2cycle out of water since October, mouse ears on water flowing about 6 gallons/minute, new impeller June last year.

How long should it take for water to start coming out the pee hole?

Conversely (and too late now), how long would it be safe to run the motor without adequate cooling?

Aside, in addition to the pee hole well up on the motor shaft, down below the waterline there are two tiny holes each side that, like the pee hole, squirt water when the motor's running. Are these also indicator holes or do they serve a different purpose?

Fishing, a man knows a serenity of soul and peace of mind that he finds in doing nothing else, and it makes no difference whether or not he catches anything. The mind of a true fisherman is not on petty subjects.

The tell tale hole gets clogged up easy, make sure it's not jammed up. It doesn't start squirting water until the thermostats open up, if your water pressure is good, you're good. If the heat alarm goes off, you have something wrong.

my 95 200 merc is in the shop now for a new midsection gasket. mine sat for about 6 months, new water pump and still no pressure, there is a gasket between the power head and mid section that has one spot that is really thin, apparently mine is blown out so water can't get to the head.

got a pic of these two "tiny" holes?.. tha older down housings had a couple "exhaust relief" holes that combines a little spray with exhaust but they went away in early 90's..

but like pat says, "It doesn't start squirting water until the thermostats open up, if your water pressure is good, you're good. If the heat alarm goes off, you have something wrong."

well, mine is ready, I got lucky that sartin marine had a lower unit that will fit mine. something happened that melted something in the water pump and toasted the lower unit.

engine runs and used lower is in great shape and works.

literally break out another thousand plus about 300. lol

at least it is fixed and I can fish the legend in a couple of weeks, all is good.

How long should it take for water to start coming out the pee hole? 60-90 seconds.

Conversely (and too late now), how long would it be safe to run the motor without adequate cooling? Assuming the high heat alarm works, you can run it until the alarm sounds. If high heat alarm doesn't work, no more than 2 minutes.

Aside, in addition to the pee hole well up on the motor shaft, down below the waterline there are two tiny holes each side that, like the pee hole, squirt water when the motor's running. Are these also indicator holes or do they serve a different purpose? No purpose while running. They drain water out of the lower unit when the motor is out of the water.

I just asked about the two tiny holes. 🤣 I wasn’t sure either.

I think the OP is talking about the 2 holes in the lower unit on the bottom of the cavitation plate. Mine has them and I noticed water coming out when I ran on the muffs. I did not put my hand down there to feel the water. I just changed my water pump and was wondering if anyone changes the rubber coupling after say X number of water pump replacements.
