I’m going to be staying with a buddy on Matagorda beach next week. We can drive around the area to get to spots. I have not been inshore fishing in several years. We plan to fish the surf and where to Colorado river comes into the bay. We will not have a boat. We will have a kayak. I’m going to try to rent one. Do you have a recommendation on which rental place to use? I have not found a place that rents fishing kayaks. I am also looking for fishing reports. What to fish for and where this time of year? What are the best lures and/or baits and rigs? Not your secret spots, (Unless you want to message me privately), I could use your help with some good info that will help me find and catch fish in the few days we will be there. I have done a lot of research on the internet and Youtube. I haven’t found much on spring fishing. Thanks for any help.

Paddle tail plastics on 1/8 head. I like hoagie super minnow but they all work. I use pumpkin chartreuse in stained water or overcast red glitter/white tail on bright days and pink/white when it’s in between. Catch trout reds and flounder.

Zara spook type topwater and gold spoon in calm/grassy areas.

Winds been stirring everything up lately buts it’s laid some today. Every productive area lately has a lot of bait activity. If I don’t see mullet stirring around it’s been blank.

Pat, how big are the mullet you are seeing? Is the 5" paddle tail the right size or should I go smaller this time of year? I want to fish the surf also. Is that something you do? Got ant tips for that?

I'm sort of a old milk cow. Stay on my path.
Especially now with new limits, don't need to catch a hundred 14" trout. So, stick with the 5 1/2" minnow, and increases the chance on something that can go into the box.

Little early for dependable surf action, unless you see the odd calm day.

Look up 3 mile cut on Google Earth. You will need 4x4 to get there and pretty much anywhere on the beach but there are some good wading and kayak fishing spots at 3 mile cut.

Pat gives good info on lures/baits. You may grab some smaller paddle tails (3" on 1/16 oz jig head) just in case because next week will be a full moon which can result in a finicky bite. A smaller profile works better for me on a full moon.

There's a store in town called Stanley's. They have all the paddle tails and jig heads you'll need. Also don't forget to get a beach permit there. You'll need it to drive on the beach.
