There's a yearly systemic treatment for roses to help prevent disease. East Texas doesn't seem to need it though.

We’ve had several knock out rose bushes over the years, they are all gone now thank gawd What's so bad about them? I know they got very popular in DFW at one point not too long ago then some sort of disease that targets those specifically came along and spread in the area... destroyed most of them...This girl I used to date has a landscape company and is a certified arborists or something... knows all about plants and trees and junk. She told me about those roses and suggested no one ever plant one. Classic tale of greed, "too much of a good thing", and gilding the Lilly. The original single knockout rose was a horticultural marvel.... drought tolerant, resistant to everything, and blooms from early April to mid December. The knockout rose was patented and sold like crazy all over the southwest. Then, even more success with the double knockout (bigger blooms) Sales were peaking with the introduction of the pink knockout and then summitted with the double pink knockout. The double pink knockout was hastily released to the public with high susceptibility to foster and spread RRD viral disease via aphids. One double pink knockout rose in a neighborhood could wipe out all the other roses in a mile radius.

She told me about those roses and suggested no one ever plant one. What Dan is referring to is Rose Rosette disease. There is not a cure or spray for it yet although it is being worked on feverishly. The offending mite devestated the North Texas area and caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage to the rose population. You can still plant them however I cautioned my customers to think of them as an annual and figure to replace them every year or two until the become affected and start over. The rose in the photo is a single bloom with between 4-8 petals vs the more traditional rose

They had planted those for a number of commercial customers and took a bath on them...they offered a one year warranty on those plants and had several large apt complexes full of them that they had put in. Damn near put her out of business. Shes not a fan lol.

I can't grow them at my place. The gophers eat the roots all the way to ground level. Caddy Shack comes to mind.....
