How do people get away with duck hunting on corps lakes like Sam Rayburn if possesion of a firearm on corps lakes is prohibited?

I'm not asking because I'm trying to hunt out there, I'm just curious how they legally have their shotguns out there if I can't carry a handgun on these lakes

No firearms on their property at all, which includes boat ramp parking lots. I tried avoiding corps lakes for a while, but that's most of the lakes around dfw. There was a push to remove the arbitrary rule a couple of years ago, haven't heard anything since, especially with Brandon in office.

My question is what are the consequence’s when I get caught? I’ve got almost as many guns in my boat as I have rods. How many people abide by that dumbazz law?

FORT WORTH, Texas – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers would like to remind visitors to area Corps lakes of the current federal regulations in place regarding weapons.

Title 36 to the Code of Federal Regulations (Section 327.13, Explosives, firearms, other weapons and fireworks) states “The possession of loaded firearms, ammunition, loaded projectile firing devices, bows and arrows, crossbows, or other weapons is prohibited.”

There are exceptions to this regulation which include possession of a firearm by law enforcement officers, and by hunters and fishermen participating in programs managed through local lake offices.

The new state of Texas open carry law set to take effect on January 1, 2016, does not change the status of the above-mentioned federal regulations. State law authorizing licensed concealed and open carry of firearms does not apply to Corps offices, campgrounds, day use areas, wildlife/hunting areas, or any area managed by the Corps.

You’ll find yourself in Federal Magistrate Court facing the judge. Just don’t argue with the Corps Ranger. They are a Federal Gun Toter, so any charges ya get are federal. The Corps has a lot of crazy rules and laws. As a retired Deputy U.S. Marshal, I saw a lot of folks in Federal Magistrate Court for all sorts of offenses on Corps land.

the Supreme Court rules that you car and boat are extensions of your home so yes you can. You can NOT carry in the parks but you can have it on your boat.

Interesting.... According to Handgunlaw.us, as of February 10, 2018, The Corps of Engineers Legal Department is still contending that it is illegal to carry onto Corps Property. However, the Legal Rep for the Corps that Handgunlaw.us spoke with said it is commonly accepted that they will not harass or search private vehicles for weapons/firearms or any other prohibited item without obvious and serious cause to do so. That said, they asserted again their authority to do so, if they chose. http://arkansasarmory.com/updates/firearms-on-us-army-corps-of-engineers-property

If that’s true, then what would be great.

But still.. there are duck hunters all over corps lakes with shotguns… I don’t understand how they do that legally, but you can’t carry a firearm as a fisherman

Basically what I’m getting from this.. when I’m out of town fishing, they’d rather me leave my handgun at the hotel so that there’s a risk of someone breaking in and stealing it, rather than it be safely concealed on my person because I can’t be trusted with a gun out in the middle of a 100,000 acre lake.

Warden was about to write us a ticket for a shotgun in the boat at the ramp on aquilla several years ago, we just said we were turkey hunting and he had to let it slide.

Hunting is allowed on COE Property in most areas, including certain wildlife management areas. You can only hunt, you cannot pleasure or target shoot. As to the Carry Laws in COE Parks and Lakes, the current status is still in "limbo." Technically a judge has ruled the prohibition to be unconstitutional and the Corps hasn't pursued the appeal because they were 're-evaluating' their rule all the way up through 2020...
