I've throw a cast net for 20+ years in Lake Lewisville and never caught this. Got one tonight. I thought it was a big chub, but the mouth isn't right. Some species of sucker? About 7 inches long [Linked Image]

I believe that’s a striped mullet, not sure as the head and mouth doesn’t look right, may be the grasp you have on it. Predominately saltwater, they can live in fresh waters with some salinity, was likely brought in as striper bait! Otherwise I’m lost hmmm

Definitely a sucker of some sort. Maybe a washed out silver red horse or a spotted sucker. Catfish bait either way!

I agree with 9094 that is it is a spotted sucker (Minytrema melanops), although they normally have a more pronounced spotted pattern. A similar species is a blacktail redhorse (Moxostoma poecilurum), but they are mainly in the Red river basin.

About a week or so ago I caught one that looked very similar but just bigger. I knew it was some sort of Carp but one of the guys on THF told me it was a River Carpsucker. And thats what yours appears to be as well. I will see if I can find pics of the one I caught. They only grow to a few pounds usually.

Thank you for showing us all how smart you are by typing out the scientific name.

Ha! No. Thats one I made, but its not my bread and butter bait. That lure accounted for maybe 10% of what I caught in the creeks this year.

The spotted sucker is also called corncob sucker, striped sucker, black sucker, winter sucker, and the speckled sucker. There are also other species of sucker commonly called spotted sucker. When someone asks for a fish ID on a complicated fish genus, the scientific name clarifies the species being identified and removes confusion. I certainly didn’t intend to offend anyone, and my response was not intended to have anything to do with my reduced mental capacity. roflmao
