In my area, I found a creek. It is narrow, but deep. I can easily see some large fish swimming around, sucking in something. I assume that they are buffalo, if not carp. They are dark colored, almost black, and the way they are sucking in with their mouth, I assume they are buffaloes.

To catch them, I am think of using corn or white bread plainly on the hook. And a spinning reel with at least 20 pound test braid, to be able to have control in such tight spaces and around many structures, and due to their size. I think this fishing scenario have the possibility of becoming like a close quarters hand to fin combat. Is this the right way to go, or am I missing something?

What rod will be best for this? My guess would be around 7 foot rod in medium heavy with fast or moderate tip, to be able to handle at least 10 pound buffaloes and be able to cast corn or bread bait. Maybe a rod rated for 15-20 line?

What about a float? Should I have one? And what type and size hook to use? My guess for hook is a size 1 baitholder or octopus hook.

Any input is appreciated.

Fish on the bottom with no float. Chum the area with some canned corn. Use maybe a small size 6 not a 6/0 hook. Put a few kernels of corn on the hook with as light a weight as you can depending on the current. Bread works the same way. Squeeze a small bread ball onto the hook, leaving the hook tip exposed.

Thank you for your response. So maybe a few split shots 6 inches before the hook to get it on the bottom and for casting distance?

Also, can a floatbe used if they are feeding higher in the water column?

You can try a float for sure.

They may be buffalo, but could also be freshwater drum. Try corn and bread, but also throw out an earthworm or a minnow. Once you know what they are for sure, you can settle in on the correct bait.

My carp rigs are the 29.95 Shakespeare Catfish spinning combo from Academy, or Walmart. It's an Orange spinning reel with a gray and orange rod. I have them strung with 20 lb Berkley Big Game mono. I do packbaits with a small circle hook, for bottom fishing, or a slip cork with that pink stuff that looks like little marshmallows for surface action.

Did you ever get back out there and find out what you are dealing with in that creek?
