Building a couple of benches for brother's dinner table. Starting with old cedar he had laying around. Had to check for nails and such, then cut to rough length and run through the [Linked Image]

saw on both sides. Next is the planer.

Did you use dowels or biscuits?

I'm building our kitchen table for out new home and didn't know which way I wanted to go.

For a table top, I used dowels. But I'm reading that neither biscuits nor dowels are needed because of today's glue. The wood will break before the glued joint. I don't plan to use dowels nor biscuits on this build.

I use this for furniture, mix with water and it will not ever separate.

built a couple of recurve bows with it.

I used biscuits to align it then the glue above to bind.

The trick is the glue line It's hard to make it right. I have a cheap jointer I use, and I have to set everything up to try to get a good line. I wish now I would have spent more money. That being said, I noticed that my front run and back run was cutting too much wood. I put a straight edge to it and there was a dip at the cutter. So I've shimmed to make it good. Invest in a good jointer if you want to do this kinda work.

That’s some good looking cedar!

I’ve been trying to make some cedar picture frames but having issues with splintering on the router cutting a Roman ogee. Any tips?

Painters tape...I learned this trick in woodworking class in HS many moons ago.

Tape the corner and undersides. This will help keep the splintering down and run a smooth edge.

You will need to clean your bit good after use.

Good tip ab. Sawdust and glue are my go to, but I don't know about picture frames out of cedar. I've picked up a couple of splinters on the glue edges running this cedar through the planer. I'm at the point where I can't run it through anymore. When I do the glue up, i'll come back and sawdust and glue and sand it out. I'll do the same with the knot holes. Brother will finish with a dark stain and a poly. If I was doing a clear finish, I'd leave it and poly or I'd try to sand it out best I could and then poly. That's me. I'm sure others with more experience can chime in.
