Dad shelled a bearing this weekend the smaller outer one, there's a small groove in the spindle now, 1/16 to 1/32" deep. Is the spindle ruined and continue to have issues if you throw new bearings on it?

The bearings rest around the entire spindle. Clean the gouge with an Emory cloth then seat a set of bearings on the spindle and see if there is any play. If not then you are good to go.

I had a trailer repair place cut off and weld on a new spindle. It works good as new.

OK he may be good to go the groove is only 1/8" wide to add to the depth I posted earlier, will wait and see if there is any play.

Any groove in the surface means it ain’t good to go.

Steez, I totally disagree and have thousands of miles of rebuilt hubs running to prove it. If your talking about the wear cup then it cant be grooved at all. But the wear cup is easily replaced. If your talking about the spindle surface and it’s only got one gouge in it, in my experience the bearings will seat on it just fine. You still have 95% of the mounting surface intact. This is case by case though and as always you can go to the trouble of putting on a new spindle but for most damage it’s not necessary.

He’s talking about the spindle. As long as the groove isn’t where the seal rides it should be ok.
