Not me, but for my brother who lives in Lubbock. Over 65, retired and filed the paperwork with Lubbock County last year. Latest property tax statement went from $2100 to $2800. I thought in Texas it was frozen after age 65. So he calls me. I don't know the answer. I haven't paid the Texas Wealth Tax in seven years.

I don't think it's a state thing, but county by county, and it's not consistent. Probably doesn't include school tax which is usually the biggest portion of your tax bill. He needs to call his local tax office.

I think that only freezes the tax rate. The appraisal never gets frozen and here lately that keeps going up, up, and away.

He should have 2 exemptions. HS (Homestead) and Over 65. Usually, you only have to file for the exemptions at the CAD (Central Appraisal District) office and it will propagate down to the County Tax office. At least that is how it is done for people who live in Rockwall County.

To my knowledge there is no "freezing" of your tax liability, it is a reduced percentage for over 65. If your property appraisal goes up, your tax liability will also go up, just not as much as someone without the over 65 Exemption.

You multiply the tax rate by the property value to calculate your taxes. The over 65 exemption applies to your rate, not your valuation.

However, there is a 10% annual cap on increases. So if his tax liability really was $2100 last year, it shouldn't go past around $2300 this year.
