Do not get one with a CV transmission. Hydrostatic is fine.

Kawasaki makes a good engine. I have one in my shop for a carburetor (owner let gas sit for over a year) that has 980 hours. It would run when they brought it in, but wouldn't idle. I cleaned the carb but didn't cure the issue. I have a John Deere L-120 that I bought new 13 years ago and other than the mower deck covered with patches welded over rust holes it has given me 940 hours of good service. I use it to pull small trailers. It has the Kohler engine.

Lowes has this John Deere, it has the V-twin engine, about the same price. The review are not quite as good as the Craftsman.

S130 22-HP V-Twin Side By Side Hydrostatic 42-in Riding Lawn Mower with Mulching Capability (Kit Sold Separately)

Any opinions on this one?

Thanks

I used to have an older John Deere 145 42" it was awesome until around the 400 hr mark the transmission started to fail. I think I got money out of it.

Come to find out, it's a common problem with the lower end JD units. As stated above many of the Lowes / Home Depot units are the "residential" models and have many parts in common.

I would look into a dealer and not a big box store...you may pay more...but you get better quality / service.

The ones sold at HD and Lowes are no different than the same model sold at a JD store

I have a husky 18. Wouldn't say it's great or bad. I've replaced a carb and a spindle. Both my fault. Had it for 6 years or so. Still mowing.
