Most of the people I know, including me, cast and flip with their right hand then switch to their left hand to reel with their right. Wouldn't it would really make more sense to cast with your right hand and reel with your left? I know it is second nature to most of us to do it this way, but does it really make sense?

Random Monday thoughts...

Im right handed but started using lefty reels about 15 years ago due elbow issues. Took all of about 20 minuets to never look back and never be out of shape again for a hookset.
Too me I think its odd that most people already reel left handed and spinning rods, but say they cant do it on a baitcaster

I'm also right handed. I switched about 20 years ago. It was when I started to learn how to flip docks that it made sense to me to make the change. I think what stops most people from changing is the cost of buying new left handed reels.

I grew up using a spinning reel a lot...I am right handed and reeled in with the left hand using the spinning reel. Baitcast reels I cast right and reeled right handed until about 5 years ago when I started using a left handed casting reel occasionally when I got tired of reeling with my right hand. I still mostly use a right hand casting reel but have several lefties in the rod box...

I’ve tried it, just don’t have the same dexterity.

I wish I were more ambidextrous but I struggle to even pick my nose with my left hand!

I'm a righty but have always casted left handed to include pitching and flipping.

I have tried several times, and likely will do again soon... it is one of the most unnatural feelings to reel a low pro lefty. For flipping and jigs, I really should.

It's natural for me to use right handed reels. The transition to my left had is pretty quick and usually happens before the lure hits the water. That being said, I do have a pitching and flipping rigs set up with left hand reels. I like them.

Spent my whole life casting right handed switching hands and reeling right handed. Missed many a top water blowups with the lure hitting the water while switching hands. Never really thought about it. Three years ago I switched to reeling left handed and now I swing to early. Can’t win for losing bang roflmao. The positive side is now I can swing and reel from either side grin.

I'm in my mid 60's and I have spent my entire life casting with my right hand and cranking with my left hand. For many years, spinning reel was my only option. Then I got my first bait casting reel which was a Abu Garcia 5001C. I bought all of those I could find. Now many companies offer the left hand solution.

Also makes more sense to set the hook with your dominant/stronger arm.

I can reel left handed but I think casting left handed would be a disaster

My friend Terry who passed away a few years ago changed all his gear for this very reason. It actually worked very well for him keeping plastics above the shallow grass in salt water.
