Caught two with this strange stripe - if you can zoom in you will see the stripe is solid and has perfectly straight lines. I'm thinking it's a racing stripe earned for speed!

Looks like a shadow from the pectoral fin in the outward position. Seen that happen on many photos. If you look at all the other shadows in the picture they all indicate thats what you are seeing.

That's no shadow, I know it doesn't look real but it was real and on both sides of two bass caught in same location about 10 minutes apart.

Any other pics? I am telling you I have seen it a million times in photos over the last several decades and its always been a shadow from a pectoral fin in a position perpendicular to the body of the fish.

I see what you're seeing too, considering the shadow from the gill plate matches the exact shading of the 'racing stripe' in question and the same angle as the shadow on the angler's face. Looks really shadowy to me.

Lets say it's not a shadow... It's most likely Melanosis very common in Bass and other fish that are exposed to sunlight.

this, ever see a fish left in really muddy water, how much color they have? too much sun sends their coloration the other way and since he said it is on both sides I don't think it's a shadow.
