Would like input on best closed face (spincast) reel to use for light tackle fishing in small fresh water bodies.
Leaning towards one that will be used for light jigs, say 1/32 to 1/4 oz.

I have light weight/ultra light spinning reels but looking to add a durable spin cast rig. Anticipate using for sunfish, crappie, etc.
Notice some of you favor 2 to 4 pound test line which is what I am interested in as most of the fishing will be done in very clear to moderately clear water.

I don't mind spending extra if the quality/durability is there.

Thanks for any suggestions.

For closed face reels, I always used Garcia Abumatic 170’s, and still have a few. Never tried 2 to 4 pound test line in them though. My late MiL was fond of the closed face left hand retrieve reels with a trigger release. I have a few of them also. The Pfleuger President version works fine with 4 pound test line and has held up for a few years of crappie fishing. They aren’t expensive.

I personally do not use closed face spin cast reels. Leo-Gar 1970 and Yesenia- Pot Licker use them a lot. They would be able to give you some very good information. thumb

I setup a Pfleuger president rig for my daughter a few years ago and it gets used a lot. I haven’t used closed-faced reels in 40+ years but it is so simple and reliable it is hard not to use.

Kind of embarrassed to admit it but it is my #1 setup for white bass fishing in a local creek smile.

That’s exactly what reel I was using when that big white bass attacked my minnow recently. Took a while to tire him out, but the reel worked fine.

we use zebco micro 33's. the small size fits in your hand making it the most comfortable reel to palm. also it is very light which doesnt hurt your wrist after fishing with them all day.
they have a fairly decent drag and its placed conveniently where your thumb naturally rest so you can adjust it as your fighting a fish. they are plenty strong for sunfish and crappie or even the occasional buffalo.

I also use the Zebco Micro reels. They outperform many more expensive reels. I have several of them.

Thanks for the input from all of you!

Trying to get the ultra light tackle up to date. I can fish river spots closer to home far cheaper than towing the boat to nearby lakes.
Car gets 36 miles per gallon, truck gets 12. The math on that is simple!

My wife uses the Zebco Micro 33 on her pole and NOTHING ELSE will work in her opinion and she has landed bou-cou slabs.

This is a subject near and dear to my heart. Like a previous poster, closed face spincast is my primary setup unless I'm strictly fishing for bass. I only use the trigger spin reels as they are much more comfortable.

Best one out there is hands down the Pflueger President triggerspin. Built like a tank, all metal, including gears, 5 bearings, holds a decent amount of line, and has a nice design. Smoothest one out there. Only downside is that it is heavy.

Next preference is the Zebco Micro 33 T. Super light, super comfortable, and durable enough to last a couple years. Doesn't hold that much line so expect to respool or tie on more line. I use this reel 80% of the time. The newest version available in stores is designed better and is smoother and quieter. The 2016 version looks better.

You can also replace the bushings inside with bearings for a nicer retrieve. Zebco sells a Micro 33 T Gold version that also has 3 bearings.

The Lews triggerspin reels are OK. Just a version of a dirt cheap Chinese reel that Lews slapped their name on.

The Diawa closed face reels are good but I can't attest to their durability.

With any of these reels it helps to keep them fairly dry inside. Keep the rotor and springs lubricated. And only use these reels if you are using straight mono or flouro. Braid works but not quite as smoothly as nylon. If you need braid to leader, pass on this style reel. If you are slip float fishing and you need to fish deep, pass. Even the smallest bobber stop doesn't flow out of the cone hole that well.

Hope that helps. If you're nearby and want to try any of these let me know.

Bought wifey a couple Zebco 33 platinums, loaded them with Suffix Superior 6lb test..................she's never been happier.I took her Daiwa Revros 3000's over, for some reason she got tons of wind knots,I never had this problem.

Nothing to be ashamed of admitting, I've used a Zebco reel and still do every season for the last 62 years.
White bass, crappie, catfish, and LMB, it catches them all.
They are still working and not tucked away in a drawer somewhere!
I've got some that are older than a lot of members on this forum! roflmao

Another motivation that I have for the original inquiry is that my success has decreased at Canyon Lake (not that it was ever good) and I suspect that ultralight tackle that I used years ago might need to be put to use once again.
That and give flourocarbon line a shot.

Appreciate all the insight.

You just might be on to something! Canyon has given me some great catches over the years using light tackle! thumb
