Hey all, we've got a house on Surfside about 5 miles down the beach(toward the pass) for 3/6-3/10. I know it's still pretty chilly temp wise, any advice on what's biting and bait? I used to fish the surf and Xmas Bay many years back, it's probably been 20 years frown. We will have kids 5-13 with us so would love to get them in on some action, even if it's just bottom fishing the surf. Any advice ya'll can give would be greatly appreciated. Are there any party boats that leave from Surfside? I've been on those where it's been pretty good action in other coastal cities. Thanks alot!

Thomas

You might try Swan lake or keylargo on Christmas bay. You use to be able to fish down there and we use to catch some redfish and flounder. Use to wade Swan lake and catch some nice redfish there. It is shallow there.

Thank you! Might do that if I have free time w/o kids. I don't want them stepping on sting rays. Is it still cold enough to need waders?

Christmas bay will be good for reds and specks and flounder. There also have been some big drum and sheepshead in my lights.
Water is still cold.

Good luck

Thank you all! There's always whiting and drum and possible sharks in the surf on fresh dead shrimp on bottom? I'm just trying to figure out a way to let the kids reel something in. The jetty might be a stretch with 6 kids in tow.

There should be party boats out of Freeport. I grew up fishing from a boat in the Surfside/Freeport area. Surf fishing can be good at times. I think the jetties would be hard to fish with younger kids. May want to check fishing reports to see if and where they are biting. Best wishes.

Thank you. I think we're gonna focus on Xmas. I've fished it before, I know it's a decent wading spot as far as no huge dropoffs and pretty shallow throughout. I bought my boys neoprene waders and ray guards just in case. It'll be a great lesson on sliding feet and learning to fish as much water as possible. I'm looking forward to it. Just wish the weather would be decent at all. Supposed to be kinda wet and cold the majority of the time frown. Oh well, can't catchem if you're not out there! I think I'm more excited about hitting Academy down there where they have 1000x more salt stuff than up here in Dallas. There's something theraputic about loading up on new lures!

Yup. A whole different inventory at Academy down here. Areas you may have known to be "hard bottom" just might not be that way anymore, so be careful wading bayside. It can get very sticky.

Thanks for that, didn't even think about that, and yes sticky bottom with kids would be tough. I probably won't even fish the first time out just to make sure they can maneuver around and get comfortable. Last thing I need is one of them getting wet and want to go home lol. The good news is we are staying mile 5 or so down the highway which is literally across street from the bay. If they do decide to go back early, I can take them and go back out for a bit.

Welp, reporting back we fished Monday-Wednesday. We tried Xmas Bay, Drum Bay, Jetties, Beach. Wind was hard north/northeast which made pretty much everything suck. We didn't catching anything except a few hardheads and whiting on the beach. Used artificial in the bays and nobody got any bites. Fished the channel side of jetty b/c of wind, bottom dead shimp nada. The hardhead and eventually whiting were almost nonstop in surf so the kids had fun reeling them in at least. We were using 2oz pyramid weights with dead shrimp. Probably be the last time we go down in March lol. It was cold. Luckily kids were troopers and still had a blast.

PS if you go down there the Bucceees in town a few miles before blue water highway has EVERYTHING you can ever need for fishing down there. I was pleasantly surprised and of course hit it up daily lol. We got down there Sunday and not sure if this is normal but there was a younger worker hanging out in the fishing area who was very helpful in choosing rigs and lures and techniques for what we wanted. Can't wait to go back but in the summer for sure! Good luck all!

March is tough. Generally windy and sometimes cold. This March has been extra cold. Beachfront water now is really cold for Texas. I haven’t been out in the saltwater in a month and a half. I mostly work on the garden or fish freshwater this time of year.

This SE wind will be filling the bays back up quickly.
Find green moving water, should be the ticket. When the water gets back in the marsh, big trout will be cruising the mud bottom grass lines, your big topwater might just catch the trout of a lifetime.

Ya, we wanted to go somewhere on vaca and knowing the water would be cold, when we booked we at least hoped the weather would be 70 or so. Not 50 with a 20mph north wind blowing lol. And it was like that all 4 days! Just crazy. I'm about sure you could pick 3 worst days of March to fish when this month is over, and those 3 days were it. My kids were troopers though, we all had waders so they weren't freezing. Only issue with that is in Xmas I could really only go a cast or so from the shore to keep from water going over their waders. I think I convinced my wife though to book again in summer smile She was weary b/c it wasn't Galveston, but the house being on the water was just incredible!
