Neighbor and I went crappie fishing today. Didn’t catch one crappie, though we swapped bait endlessly, which meant using this rod or that rod with different jigs. I have one rod with braid on it (Suffix, I think). While using that rod, I hooked into a very large White Bass. He’d have popped the high vis mono that I had on the other rods, but wasn’t able to break the braid. Only caught the one fish, but it was big enough that the wife and I had him for supper. Actually it was a ‘her’. Braid saved my supper.

No pics, since I didn’t think to do it. And my scale is not much good. Maybe 4 pounds or so. Full of eggs. Might not have popped the mono, to be honest, but I was happy to have the rod with braid.

Braid is a lifesaver sometimes. Have landed a 6.5 lb bass, 20lb flathead, and a 30 lb gar on a jig pole with braid. The only time it gets aggravating is fishing under cypress trees or in high wind.

I bet that white bass was a fight and a half.

Congrats on the catch and on dinner!

IF you are on a lake with hybrids... be careful and make sure which is which. On Cedar Creek, we have both, have to always watch out.

Cheers,
Ken

I’ve landed these things on 4lb mono and then some, I specifically use 4lb mono to fish for striper and hybrids in the spring too. Set your drag and you can land just about anything.
