Guys I had an experience this morning I just had to take the time to tell you about. The grin on my son’s face when I asked him if he enjoyed driving a bass boat. This is the very first time he’d driven one on his own. We went down to Tira boat ramp here on Cooper and he probably clocked around 20 miles. He didn’t make any top end runs but we’ll do that later. Dad showed him what it was capable of though. After talking to him here at the house; to say he is “hooked” would be an understatement. Here are some pictures of him about 25 years ago on Fork in my Nitro and today on Cooper.

we never wet a hook, I just let him drive and taught him the ins and outs of proper boat handling and safety. Cooper is so low right now I’m actually afraid to fish it for LMB’s. If you get into timber or anything that would hold fish you’re dragging mud. I experienced that the hard way about two weeks ago. We were originally going to Holbrook and fish but I knew it really didn’t have the room for him to get a lot of time behind the wheel. He loaded it when we got ready to go home and did just fine. Since he has some understanding of what to do he’s going to be my chauffeur from here on out when I’m not tournament fishing, though we may do some team stuff, SOT, and possibly the Berkeley, and Big Bass Splash.

Something else I got him to do this evening that he'd never shown interest in was throwing a bait caster. He has spinning tackle and he'd always use that when we'd fish together.. We got out in the yard a practiced that for a while and he actually picked it up pretty quick. I had him throwing a 1/2 ounce jig on braid on a 6'6" Falcon medium heavy rod and Lew's reel. He never did backlash it.

My youngest is in college and she’ll finish up in the spring of 2023. My oldest in these pictures finished around 2018. The pictures from when he was little on Fork he doesn’t even remember. He boated about a half a dozen fish that day. I was chasing breaking shad with a chrome blue 1/4 oz Ratl-Trap near the mouth of Burch Creek. I’d just set the hook and hand him the rod. He’d get so excited he’d nearly be screaming while fighting these fish.

Cool, did he have no interest in driving a bass boat since the first pics were taken?

I probably would have but I had about a 20 year gap where I didn't own one. I got this one for Christmas. I had to step away from the sport while I was raising him and his sister. He picked up the shotgun and won a 4H regional championship in both Trap and Skeet around 2010 and his sister took up competition dancing and for you guys that think tournament fishing is expensive competitive dancing makes feeding out of your back pocket a bass boat, truck, and tournament fees seem like chump change. I spent most of those years sitting at the house on the weekends if I wasn't with my son when he was competing. On the flip side, when I did get to go out and do something it was to practice shooting clays with my son, and I was almost as good as he was at one point. They both come away with a work ethic that is unmatched by most kids these days. I'm about to introduce my son to tournament fishing and my gut feeling right now is it's going to click with him and in a big way. He's a very analytical thinker and I think that will play in his favor.

Cool!

Sounds like you have a lot to catch up on the fishing.
