Before the cold snap the fish were starting to get a little shallower and a tad higher up in the water column. Yesterday I was only able to locate fish hugging the bottom in 32'. In fact they were so thick and close to the bottom that it almost looked like a false bottom echo on the graph. Caught about 20 and brought 10 home. You had to reel them up extra slow to keep from killing them. Only time I have experienced that was years ago at Lake Fork.

We’re another 4-6 weeks out at the least, probably more. Night temps are still in the 30s, it takes a while for that water to warm up.

They’ve had eggs since December. We’ve had a few warm days but it’s gonna be a while. Most lakes mid March you’ll find a few but then they go back deep again every time a little front rolls through, water has to get in to the 60s and stay there for it to be anything consistent. You’ll find a few males checking out the shallows around 56-57 degrees but not enough to waste your time unless youre just dying to catch some shallow because the vast majority are still going to be in prespawn. Peak spawn isn’t until the water temps hit about 65.
