hello!!! I have a 1995 skeeter 200zx with a 95 mercury 200xri. has a J&B manual jack plate , no hot foot and no hydraulic steering. 4 blade stainless prop ( no clue what the size or pitch is). kinda new to fiberglass boats as all i have had in the past is aluminum. hole shot is a lot slower than my last boat( 2005 bass tracker 185 with 90hp) so im not sure if this is normal or not. i would say a good 7 sec plane time. has good top end i think as it runs about 64mph with 2 people. the guy i got it from said it would run 68mph so im assuming that with just 1 person. I guess my question is does the plane time and top end sound about right for this boat or should i start changing things Oh and its VERY hard to steer at WOT takes two hands , no pulling to either side.
All help is appreciated!!!!!

need to know what prop/pitch and wot rpm at minimum.
may need prop worked, different prop, jackplate may need reset etc.
too many variables to say anything for sure.
prop pitch and name should be on the barrel between blades or if now pull nut and look where the propshaft was.

Still don't know much but looked at the prop when I got home. No markings other than. Turbo-m. 13 3/4 × 25. What brand could that be?

I would grease the steering cables regardless, but it's possible the jackplate may be too high. Try lowering it 1/2". This might help with holeshot but mainly loosen the steering a little. Aluminum boats are gonna plane out a lot quicker than fiberglass due to weight and hull design.

Man, you need to invest in Hydraulic Steering running a 200 HP outboard.

Lot's of stuff going on here. A few from the top. NEVER put grease on a steering cable. Grease will always dry out, and pack itself in the cable housing. If some knuckle head has already put grease on it, clean it out with carb cleaner and penetrating oil and get it free, then lube with light oil or silicone that won't pack up. Skeeters run best with all the bow lift it can get. That won't come from a 4 blade, they are designed for transom lift not bow lift. Find you a 25M Yamaha pro series prop, that'll be the ticket for your rig. Really stiff steering is a symptom of your motor being a little high, that torque comes from the prop blade surfacing. If you're throwing a big rooster tail, and you're not getting lift, might want to start by dropping the motor 1/4" at a time until you lose speed. If you like the way it's running, then a $25 skeg mounted torque tab will take 90% of your steering torque out.

Turbo's are not all "that" ta start with!.. what part of tha country ya in? get in touch with Josh at steve's custom props... he can get ya started in tha right direction...........
like pat says "lots stuff goin' on" (torque tab is excellant suggestion).. i liked tha "weld on" myself.. it can be adjusted as needed... need more 'bout motor itself also (performance wise).. sounds like ya need ta start from scratch with set up.. ie: offset, motor height and prop..
good luck.......................... T

The yamaha and mercury shaft splines are identical, you have to change thrust washer and castle nut to work, lots of places to get them.
Is the steering stiff sitting on the trailer? If so you need to pull your cables and clean everything out. Carb cleaner and penetrating oil, six rolls of shop towels to unpack and wipe out the grease goo that'll come out.
Internet diagnostics is hard, because you can't see what's up, so better details get better answers. So, let's start with WFO rpms, that's full throttle, full trim. Now what is the boat telling you? Is it running high and a little loose? Or flat and stuck to the water? How high is the roostertail? Is there water breaking out of the sides? Or only straight back?

You can waste months and a lot of money on stuff you don't understand how they work.
Or take Steve up on his offer and be done in a day.
Pretty easy choice.

I installed and ran it for a while but I lost 2 to 3 mph so I took it off. From what I recall you need to make sure you mount it on the correct side of the skeg.
