Quality of blank has a lot to do with sensitivity. More sensitive rods generally are easier to break.

No, sensitivity is all about the blank used. The blank used to make the rod will determine how a rod will react. A fast rod will be more sensitive than a slow (glass) rod. But there are many things that aid in increasing the quality of a rod. A light rod will be more sensitive, than a heavy rod. And a balanced rod will be better than a rod that is not balanced. When you hold the reel/rod, you shouldn't be feeling like the rod is weighted so that it is heavy towards the tip. When you hold a very high modulus graphite blank that is super sensitive, you are going to feel everything. The more sensitive a rod is, the more delicate it becomes. Some of the best blanks out on the market are quite delicate, and you will often see pro's break a rod setting the hook. You get what you pay for, and not all rods are equal. I cannot buy a rod until i feel it in my hands, i like a fast tip rod for most applications. One that is light, and feels like its not even there.b But for crankbaits, i like a soft long rod. I want to load up the rod when the fish bites, and it results in more fish in the boat. You will be more likely to pull a bait out of the fish's mouth with a stiff rod.
Best advice I could give someone is to buy a good 100$ rod for worms/jigs that will be fished slow and you need a little more sensitivity. You can then put fluoro on this rod which is more responsive than monofilament line. Getting started is a learning experience and you "don't know, what you don't know". Find a fishing mentor to help you, and spend some time on the water. If you are fishing a lure that is making contact with the bottom, like a (worm or jig). If you cannot tell if your fishing on chunk rock, gravel, or feel the structure at all your spinning your wheels. If you can't feel the structure, your not going to feel the soft bites.

I had shoulder surgery last year, so i had to hold the rod with my dominant arm (right). I found that in a sling i could hold the rod with my right arm, and turn the handle with my left hand when wearing the sling. Long story short, i have been reeling with my right hand my whole life. I put all the baitcast rods/reels up and used spinning for everything for about 6 weeks. I found out real quick that holding my rod with my left arm is 10 times more sensitive that my other arm. Guess all the years of fishing fine tuned my senses with that arm. It suprised me, and when you are out fishing swap hands and give it a try. A seasoned fisherman could pick up an old 33 classic rod/reel setup and probably dominate a beginner. Allot of the time it's not the arrow, it's the indian. A good rod helps if you know how to use it, but a rod doesn't catch fish "your experience, and senses" catch fish. I see allot if threads asking "what type of rod should i use for a (this type of bait)?". It can get very scientific, but do you really need 8 different types of rods. I don't think so. It's all in your head, and how confident you feel using that lure.

I used to fly fish heavily when i lived in Colorado, fly rods get stupid expensive. And we won't even go into fly reel prices. That is just plain painful.

Good luck, and get out and wet a line.

I've been looking at jig pitching, flipping, and casting rods mainly because most all of my rods are old IM6 material, and I wanted to upgrade to something more modern and technologically advanced. After watching Jordan Lee fish Bussey Brake with one of his signature ABU Garcia rods; sells for less than $100, pitch and flip all day and boat fish like nobody's business it really put some thoughts in my head as to what to do. I already have his 8-foot cranking rod and really like it. It doesn't cast near as far as my old 7-foot David Fritz rod, but I think once I reclean my reel that will change; think I put too much grease in it. I also want to upgrade to a newer low-profile reel as well.

If those IM6 are All Star's, and you decide to get rid of them, let me know. I might be interested.
