I plan on heading to the East Bay around the last weekend of February if all goes according to plan. I’m a strict freshwater fisherman mostly for bass or fly fishing for trout. I’ve always wanted to catch a redfish on a fly rod, but I’ll be bringing conventional gear too. I’ll be bringing my kayak with me and plan to camp on Bolivar Beach and launch out of Stingaree Marina. This is all based on my research so far and looking on Google Maps.
I’m looking for some info and tips from people who fish this area more often and for someone who is new to saltwater fishing. This will only be my third time fishing saltwater in my life and my first time in Galveston and also my first time out of my kayak.
Any advice you guys can give will be GREATLY appreciated. I’m in the Dallas area, so I’d hate to make the drive all the way down and not know what to do when I get there and not catch any fish.

We have rented a beach house in Gilchrest several times and my son fished the surf and from the shore northeast of the ferry landing. We had dinner at Stingerees once on each trip. Nice facility and somewhat protected water on the Intracoastal. Watch out for the barges while you fish in your kayak. Some big ones rumble through. Neighbors were set up for surf fishing and they looked to be successful but that was in October. Good luck!

Fishing Options: The marshes and back lakes to the West and East of Stingaree's, East Galveston Bay, Yates Cove, Yates Bayou, Big Pasture and more. Rig for trout in the bay and Yates Cove. Redfish and Flounder in the marsh. Bonus Fish: Black Drum and Sheepshead. Don’t go alone and wear PFD, & phone. You can also put in at north jetty if winds cooperate. Check out YouTube MDLR Fishing

Holler at me via PM, as it gets closer and I will give you some more recent info, as it changes daily this time of the year due to fronts, water levels, tides, etc. I have been fishing down here for 30 years and have lived here full time for past 6 years, so have a pretty good handle on it most of the time.

All good areas mentioned. East Bay fishing has been off for a while. You can still catch them but it’s tougher. It’s even tougher in Trinity. It should rebound some this year if the rivers don’t bring floods of freshwater.

Anywhere you find lights hitting the water at night. Other than that, it depends on tidal movement mostly, but also water temperature, Etc..

East bay isn't what it use to be since they closed roll over pass. It doesn't get as much tidal flow as it use too. Plus a lot of the oyster reefs are dead from fresh water in the spring rains over the past years.
