I'm surprised I don't see anyone else fishing for buffs/carp off the back of boats in the Marinas. I fish two fairly short, medium heavy (and cheap) fiberglass rods with trolling/level wind reels. After casting, I tighten then back-off the star drag with the spool locked, and that gives me about 4 lbs. of drag. Fish bite, run, then I manage the fight with mostly just the star drag. Casting fairly light hair rigs with or without pack bait is done by stripping the 40 lb. braid straight out the reel into the waste basket (fly fishers would call this a stripping basket), then flipping the rig within a 30 ft arc where I've chummed...enough to manage that initial run away from the boat.
