hello all! managed to get out on the lake today with my dad, and got some good quality time. The weather was beautiful as was the sunset. Today, after recommendations from a few anglers and a bit of google maps searching I found myself at a place known as "The cut". a small section of the old lake Dallas dam, from what the internet says. I fished the very base of the area just to get a feel for the area and I caught.... absolutely nothing! I'm not sure where exactly I went wrong, since this is my first time chasing larger game (Going for gar and catfish.)

I fished some leftover raw swai catfish fillets no one was gonna munch on with a small offset shank worm hook since I didn't quite have the right gear. Slapped on a bullet weight and let that fly into the great beyond. fished from about 3:45 to 6:15. No snags, surprisingly, so I suppose most of the failure was just my ineptness in the sport. The water was extremely calm, and I only saw 2 larger fish jump near a buoy. That's about all the action I got

Nonetheless, it was a much-needed break from school work and gave some good time to think.

Hey Danial, I think you were in a pretty good spot today. You definitely need to get the right gear though. I'm assuming you were bank fishing. I would suggest that it's probably gonna be tough for you to get fresh bait from the bank so try getting some carp fillets. I was told that you can get them from some Asian markets. you may be able to get whole carp. If you do, scrape the scales off and then cut a filet with the skin on. Then cut the fillet into pretty good size chunks. I would say about a third of the size of a chicken breast. Use at least an 8/0 circle hook and put together some Santee Cooper rigs. You can buy them pre-made from Bass Pro or maybe even Academy. They will help keep you from getting hung up as well as keep your baits a little off the bottom. You want to make sure you can cast really far also. When you get a good hard bite, don't grab the rod out of the rod holder to try to set the hook. Just start reeling as hard as you can until you've got him hooked. Then pull the rod out. Get you some good quality rod holders because a 20+ pound blue can rob you of a rod real quick. This time of year, look for anywhere that you reach water deeper than 25 or 30 feet. Hope this helps some. Good luck and keep us posted. Be sure to take pics and post them.

Go back with some corn, small hook and small weight. Fish at the beginning of the dam in the sandy area and catch a carp. Filet it up and put in a ziplock bag. Walk back down to the cut with the recommended gear mentioned above and you should have better luck. I typically bank fish just to the outside of the "cut".

Fishing this area of Lewisville can be productive at times. Main thing you want to do is utilize the same bait that the catfish in this area feed on. Shad and bluegill. With the water cooling off, both may be a little difficult to find. If you have a community pond or smaller lake near you, go out with some nightcrawlers, small hook and a bobber. Catch you some perch/bluegill and keep them on ice or freeze whole immediately. When you're ready to go for catfish, thaw fish you caught and cut them in to good sized chunks then chunk them out there. This may help.

If you have no way of catching bait, try going to an asian market and find the most oily fish you can find. I have used bonita and ribbon fish with success.

Guess I’m just overly cautious but, me personally I wouldn’t use the Swai for bait. Not worth the headache trying to explain that its not channel cat fillets. GW have a tough enough time
