Hit Choke for a few hours this afternoon. Got on the water about 12, had a nice 10mph breeze from the south and water temps 70-71. Pulled into a shallow spawning cove and beds were everywhere. Starting connecting with some 1-3 lbs males within 5 minutes on a chatterbait and sluggo, and it was game on. When the wind died down about 2pm the bite shut down. Moved to another area and starting throwing a trap and ripping it out of the grass to get a reaction strike, had two strikes but could not hook up.
About 5pm we went back to the cove we started at and the the big girls started to show up. Caught 3 over 5 and lost a giant on the chatterbait. Left them biting to get back to the ramp before dark.
Great start to the New Year!

Saw one big gator I would estimate at 10-11 feet. Lots of matted grass, look for the coves with a channel or ditch running through them, we were having a hard time using anything with treble hooks except in those areas that had grass that was still 3-4 under water. Even had to fish the chatterbait fast to keep out of the thick stuff, a lot of the bites were so close to the top you could see them swirl on it, including the big girl I lost, but they would not hit a topwater.
Kept 4 that were 14-16" for the grease two had 3-4" perch in them and 1 had eggs that were close to being ready to drop.

My son and I went yesterday and we didn’t have a bite. There’s so much grass we get overwhelmed. Great report. Thank you

Lol, it was “on fire” up until the fronts. Then the fire fizzled.

Love the “on fire” internet threads! Thanks for the intel, me and my traveling Louisiana buddies (all unemployed) are en route! I’ve been scouring the web for just this sort of report, my freezer was getting low. I just got a new cordless electric Bubba blade!

Don’t forget to take your shotguns and then you can shoot at the bassboats, just like the current duck hunters do. bang
