I'm thinking about getting a new Tundra and found out that they no longer put the 5.7 motors in the 2022. You can only get one with a 3.5 Twin Turbo which is a new motor for Toyota. What do you think? Good or Bad?

I'm sure it'll be a great engine combo, but personally, I try to avoid the first year of any new major redesign of a vehicle. Even the 5.7 had a few issues when it was new. Some were expensive issues, too.

It's not a new motor, been in their Lexus lineup since 2017.

I’m keeping an eye on them too. It might not be the right move, but I’m waiting to buy after some inventory returns. Luckily I don’t NEED to buy today. I’m very interested in test driving one.

I haven’t kept up with the Toyotas, this 3.5 is like an eco-boost (shared from ford) or their own design? Guess I should just google it.

If it’s like Fords, I’d have no problem owing one.

Similar in power but their own design.

I read someplace that Toyota had fewer problems with their "new redesign year" stuff than others. Maybe their R&D is a little more comprehensive.

I read that Toyota has beat General Motors in sales for 2021. I guess they were able get ahold of more chips.

I bought the first year for Tundra in 2000 and it was the best truck I ever owned. Not one trip to the shop until I turned it in on trade for a 2006. The first year issues just don’t seem to be a Toyota problem. The new engine is far from being new.

Yep, GM will take the spot back when the chip shortage eases.

This has me curious as our local Chevrolet dealer has lots of new 2022 trucks on the lot, while the Toyota store has none. I stopped at the Toyota place to look at the one they had and was told it was sold as were all of the Tundras that are coming in. Not saying you are wrong, maybe it is Toyota just can't make enough right now.

Either the chevy dealer just got a shipment in and in that case they will be gone in a few days or they have an outrageous markup and people are shopping elsewhere.

With the prices continuing to rise I went ahead and ordered a new one. They couldn't tell me when it would be in but I did get a locked in trade value on my 2017 and can still drive it until it does get here.

You may be spot on on the markup, as there were NO WINDOW STICKERS. I guess you have to ask them what they want for them. Their lot has been full for four or five weeks now.

There is a lot of info on the internet about the new truck. Most of it is positive reviews from actual owners. Good HP and torque and 10 speed tranny...might be a good move that Toyota made

I've lost some faith in Toyota designed items. Their new-ish 9 speed transmission they run in their camry/corolla/rav4/highlander is borderline awful. My dad's Tundra that he traded for his Ram 1500 was the worst truck he ever owned. Furthermore, buying an SUV engine they put into a truck is a bad idea. I did that with my ecodiesel and it was a stressful deal because they had lots of luck with the motor in their european SUVs but trucks just use way more torque day in and day out than SUVs and it didn't go well. Lots of blown motors out there.

The new Ram 1500 with a Hemi is the best riding half ton with the best transmission and best infotainment system. Gets great mpg, very reliable, and is the most affordable to boot.

I agree, but still bought a new GMC truck. Time will tell if good choice or not!

GMC and Ford are a close 2nd these days. I think both were a ways behind 4-5 years ago but not anymore. My favorite truck I ever had was a 1999 GMC Sierra 1500 regular cab stepside. Dad gave it to me so I could pass on my S-10 to my little brother, and that Sierra was a great truck for a very long time. One fuel pump and one window motor and we had bought it new and sold it with about 200k miles on it. Great truck, and the new ones ride really nice and run great also.

Admittedly, I haven't been in a 2022 Tundra but for nearly 2 decades they've been outclassed by the entire market in almost every respect.

I got the new Tundra yesterday and I am really impressed with it. It's like everything has been improved but time will tell if it's everything they say it is. I will let you know.

Yes the tundras are always behind the curve. They’re 10 years behind in putting out a truck with a twin turbo V6. My understanding is they’re not offering any sort of options for V8s now which makes no sense. Toyota is usually about a decade behind for and GM in the technology department and this is no different. I’ll be interested to see what the specs are because the tundra has been lagging in every performance category for the past 10 years as well.

There is no question that the Tundra is lagging in technology area....I have 2019 Tundra Limited. However, reliability is off the charts in comparison to other trucks I have had. I am looking to replace my Lexus RX with something able to tow my Ranger 185 Intercoastal. Looking at a Sequoia vs GX 460.....however both are not available without ordering. (NO INVENTORY)

Had 2000 too, great truck - 267k with just regular maintenance

A twin turbo 6 cylinder isn’t a plain 6 banger

Actually if you were to break it down by brand, it would be Ford, Ram, Chevy, GMC, Toyota....etc

I think the key to the Tundras success will be gas mileage. They have to be competitive with the other brands. They are at least equal to or better than the rest in most every comparison, except gas mileage. I’ve had several Tundras and will buy a new one when I need a new truck, but I hope that it does get better mileage.

Completely agree. Mine is a beast. Runs REALLY strong. Comfortable. Looks good. Lots of options. Lots of room. Paint is holding up really well. Heck, it’s a 2015, paid off, and still looks like a new truck.

….but that 10.5 mpg average is a beat down. I will say fuel mileage wasn’t a concern when I bought it, but it could and SHOULD be better. The only truck I’ve ever owned that was worse was my 93 Lightning and it had bigger injectors, and a aftermarket cam and head work. Hell, my old 76 F100 was better on fuel than my Tundra.

This is my third Tundra and I am thinking that I like it better than the other two. I looked at all the others (chevy, ford, dodge) and the Tundra was what I got. My wife really loves it and you know what they say, a happy wife makes for a happy life. I have only towed with it one time and ie seems like it was as good or better than the 2017 that I had. I drove it from my home in Gatesville to Lake Fork which is 183 miles and got 18 MPG which is a lot better than what I got with my old one, however, this truck isn't a 4 wheel drive. I hope it gets better after I get more mileage on it.
