I looked at a utube on it. The guy said they need to be replaced every five years unless they have been run dry. I had always heard 2 years. I always suspected that may have been for revenue generating purposes. Thoughts?

If you have a fairly good mechanical ability its an easy job. You can find the yamaha kit on ebay or amazon far cheaper than the shops or major parts sights.

I learned from this video and Marine Tech Tools sale a lot of specialty tools that make working on outboards, Seastar systems, and tilt and trim units easier.

I change out my impeller every 100 hour service. I just buy the entire kit from PartsVu.

I replace yearly, usually the same time I change out gear lube in my lower unit. It’s fairly easy, the “key” usually ends up being the most difficult part for me, make sure your new impeller kit has one in it.

The woodruff key took me about two crown and cokes to get out. Definitely the hardest part.

Depends on how often you run it and what conditions it is run in.
Get yourself a good water pressure gauge and monitor it.

My Merc requires at least 12psi but I set the limit at 15psi at full throttle and rpm. With a new impeller I generally see 20 plus on a new one and if I do not run it churning mud it can last 3 years. If run in sand it can deteriorate in a couple hours.
