I have not, but after riding in one multiple times I have no doubt it would pull any bass boat just fine. The largest of bass boats are 5k fully loaded going down the road- a 2.7 would pull that easy, heck any new midsize would,

Researching this it shows there to be a 500lb difference between a 5.3 and a 2.7 in towing capacity and only a 45hp difference. I'm thinking about a Custom Trail Boss with the 2.7, but don't know if the numbers match the performance of the truck. Has anyone had experience with this truck pulling a 22' boat?

Don’t think you can get 2.7 in a trail boss . I may be wrong though.

Online it shows the option for the LTD Custom Trail boss. Weird that the two engine options are their smallest (2.7) and biggest (6.2), and not the most used (5.3).

With 350 lb/ft @ 1500 rpm, that thing should have no problem pulling any boat.

I'm sure it would work just fine but me being a mechanic I'd be very skeptical of engine durability with the turbo 2.7 under heavy loads. In order for that engine to make the power and torque to equal a V8 under load it's going to be making some serious cylinder pressure and that could eventually translate into a blown head gasket, cracked head, or a cylinder splitting down the side.

After seeing 3.5l ecoboosts with 500k to a million miles, I think that argument is long dead.

Towed my 21' Triton for the first time with my F150 3.5L Ecoboost and it was sweet, acceleration was great and cruised like it wasn't there. The 10 speed really made a difference. Then I towed a 1989 4runner on a 18' tandem trailer and did great also. Averaged 15.4 mpg towing and I was running 70 to 80 with the 4runner. Ave 20.6 without towing and I can not help putting my foot in it a few times. Happy, happy...

Fun truck, millage sucks simply put. Have a 22' Custom Trail boss with a 2.7 Turbo, and have never gotten over 18mpg. Pulling my 04' ZX250 I'm lucky to average 12mpg, most of the time its not even that. Motor has the power to tow, but just doesn't get millage for some reason. Considering trade in if I cant figure it out.

I went from 2016 V6 4x4 tacoma, which got HORRIBLE mileage. I drove 2.7, 5.3 and for the price of the trail boss I settled on a 2023 2500HD Custom 6.6L gas....figured after driving the others and seeing the low MPG on them, I went BIG truck and get 15 MPG on the 2500HD 6.6L gas, better than my V6 Tacoma when towing a boat....
Can the 2.7, 5.3 etc gas pull, yes but they do get big mileage difference when towing....My 2021 boat is an all Aluminum G3 Bay which weighs 1600 LBS, boat, motor and trailer.

After seeing 3.5l ecoboosts with 500k to a million miles, I think that argument is long dead. My mom and stepdads 3.5 eco boost has less than 40,000 and it lives at the ford dealer with misfire codes left and right. The argument about quality control is alive and well.

I agree with ogles: If you use an itty bitty engine and make the horsepower via a turbo(or two), engine life is gonna suffer, plus gas mileage isn't gonna be pretty while towing. Replacing a turbo is a major expense. Gimme a big, normally aspirated V-8 for towing a big load. If you only occasionally tow a heavy trailer, it'll probably be O.K. IslandJim

Yeah well, I don't have to use somebody else's truck to make my arguements. My 3.5l 2013 has about 117k and no misfire codes, ever. Been to the shop once for a recall. I did replace a sensor and the turn signal stalk. It's also had a brake job and new plugs. Not bad for an old truck imo. My 2.7l 2017 has over 60k and no misfire codes. Its never been to the shop. No issues. Perfect.
