This is my first time working on an outboard myself and I need some help aligning my shift rod, I dropped the lower unit no problem but I’m having trouble with realigning my shift rod, I tried reviewing the manufacturers suggested height for proper alignment but I still can get it. I removed the side panel for better access and was able to see the pin position and height. I tried adjusting it with pliers and still can’t get it aligned. I have a 1996 Evinrude 115, any tips will help!

Did you spin the shift rod? If not the slight bend in the rod looks towards the boat. If you shift the motor into forward before dropping it makes it easier. But you can move the shift lever as long as you didn’t let the shift rod spin to pin it back. Then shift to forward to finish tightening the bolt. It’s tight to get to it, but it’s not impossible. Just get someone to move the shifter ever so little to line it up. Hope that helps. I just did a water pump on my 1996 Johnson.

I got it, thank you for the help, I was able to find the correct height and brought the shift rod forward with the pliers while I put in the pin, glad that’s out of the way. Now I need to start it up.

it also helps to have something to hold the hole in place while you get the bolt in, I used 1/8" welding rod. 8" needle nose too.
