 Jon Boat Registration?

I'm buying a Jon boat for hunting and will be putting a trolling motor on it. Looks like I need to get it registered. What paperwork will I need? Not even sure a Jon boat has a serial number on it.

If you plan on fishing public waters, the title on the boat needs to be registered w/TPWD. And yes, it has serial number somewhere, probably on the transom.

If you plan on fishing public waters, the title on the boat needs to be registered w/TPWD. And yes, it has serial number somewhere, probably on the transom. I believe if you put a motor on it (electric or combustible engine) you will need to register it - no matter what the use is.

The main thing you need is a title. If you do not have a title I would not buy the boat. The serial number is usually on the back of the boat. If there are 2 small holes the plate with the serial number may be gone. It will be really hard to get it registered without a title or serial number.

Unless you have your own pond or small lake on private property, if it doesn't have a title don't buy it. The hassle of trying to sell it later without a title will warrant never buying it in the first place without a title.

All modern Jon boats have VIN#s. It would have be about 80 years old for it not to have a VIN#. If a Jon boat doesn't have a VIN#, it is far more likely that the VIN# plate was ripped off than it being a true really old Jon boat built before VIN#s were issued. If it doesn't have a VIN#, don't buy it. It's not worth the trouble. If you buy a new boat, you need the Manufacturer Statement of Origin and the sales receipt. If you buy a used boat, you need a PWD form 143, the Title and a Bill of Sale. Make sure the Title or Manufacturer's Statement of Origin matches the VIN # on the boat. There is a lot of fraud on Craigslist and ineptitude at Academy and Bass Pro Shops/Cabelas. https://tpwd.texas.gov/fishboat/boat/owner/buying_and_selling/

Like said before if it does not have a title don't buy it. It would be easer to go to the moon than mess with the Parks AND Wildlife

PWD 143 and 403. Add the Statement of Fact. Should be good to go.
