BLUF: I get very frustrated fishing in the wind. I need to get smart on weather reports and knowing what kind of weather to expect on fishing days.

I can go out fishing for 12 hours and not catch anything and I'm ok. When I go out fishing for a couple hours and have to deal with big bows in my line, not being able to see anything watching my line, not being able to get my bait to where I want it, I get a little irate. I would rather not go fishing on days where the wind is going to blow enough to throw me off.

What kind of weather apps, or services, or methods do you use to gauge the conditions for a day in the future? How do you gauge what kind of conditions you'll have to deal with the next time you go fishing?

Just be aware that every forecast should be taken with a grain of salt! Weather in Texas can change on a dime.

hate to say it but, if you don't like fishing in the wind, you'll have to move... LOL what ever the news weather guy/station say's the wind is going to be for the day, add 5 to 7MPH to it ALWAYS !!!... this general rule has worked for me...

I use the hourly wind forecast from weather.com and it's always served me well. Of course, I used to go out fishing in winds up to 25-30mph. In more recent years I've been kayak fishing so I look for much calmer days now.

The Corpus guys call the TV weatherman there "Dead Wrong Dale". I use windfinder, but don't 100% rely on what they predict. Close, though. IslandJim

I like Dark Sky Weather, it gives as much or as little detail as someone wants, and can display it minute by minute , digitally or in graphical form. If there's rain in the forecast, it tells you how much which most weathermen don't include, and that is really important. For example, if it's 80% chance of rain over an hour, but the amount is only 0.1 inches, it doesn't mean much. The app gives Wind speed and direction which are both important, especially if they are high numbers and from an undesirable direction which will be sustained versus diminishing. Almost all of my fishing is trolling with a motor and done on Rivers, so wind is not as big a consideration as in Open Water. Sometimes during the very hot and humid Summers, I prefer a minimum of 10mph which makes the high humidity and heat index more tolerable, and the tree-lined Shady spots feel much cooler than those that are in the blazing sun. Of course, winter changes most everything around... Water Clarity is also important to be able to avoid collisions with unseen boulders on a river, so I usually wait a few days after a 1"+ rain so that everything settles down- before going fishing.

I hear you. I grew up in the Ozarks and my Uncle used to say it was too windy to fish if there was a ripple on the water because you could not see your bobber well. After I retired I got a lake house out at PK and a fishing boat. Before I upgraded my trolling motor, the wind actually blew me into the bank with the trolling motor on high speed. Texas wind is no joke.

I use Weatherunderground.com and look at the 10 day weather. There is a graph that shows wind and temp by hour. When a forecast says wind is 15 mph, that is an average and does not take into account Gusts. You need to see what the gusts are and the wind by hour. If you have the option like I do as a retired person, you can avoid the days and hours when the wind is crazy. It's not just a fishing issue either, one a lake like Tawakoni or Texoma you can get into real trouble if the wind is high and you are on the wrong end of the lake.
