Voltage at the units plug reads 12.56V
the display shows 10.23V. Lead acid battery.
why the big difference? Is the voltage adjustable in software?

Are you measuring the plug voltage While it's connected to the unit with the unit turned on?

From the Humminbird FAQ:

Quote
Check for Proper Voltage

Check for proper voltage to your depth sounder at the connection to the battery or at the fuse panel. This will ensure that you are getting the proper voltage to the fish finder. The operating voltage range is shown in your Operations Manual.

It is advisable to check the voltage with all of your electrical equipment running as well as with the main motor and/or trolling motor running at different speeds to insure proper amperage.

This may show an over-voltage, under-voltage or electrical interference condition.

If you have an over or under voltage condition, it may be due to an inadequate charging system on your boat. Have your boat's electrical system inspected by qualified personnel.

Also need to know:

  • Is the Helix wired to its own battery?
  • What gauge wire is the Helix connected to?
  • Have you measured the voltage under load of the power plug from the battery while unplugged from the unit?
  • Do you have another Helix or have a friend with a Helix to check voltage of both units?

The unit shows LOADED VOLTAGE==using AMPS.

A voltage meter does not put a load on the circuit, so you won't see the loss due to inadequate wiring/connections.
