What is everyone's opinions on the two? I know both have some advantages. Are 4 strokes more reliable? Thank you guys.

I’ll run my two stroke until I can’t keep it running, then I’ll drive down to Mexico and buy another one. Are four strokes more reliable? By design, they can't be, you have 4X the moving parts for valves, cams, and separate crankcase oiling parts. Two stroke (NOT DFI) is pretty much an air pump with a spark plug. I can't run a four stroke on my scooter, it'll sink it. I don't want a different boat, so we'll keep doing what we're doing until just can't do it anymore. PS don't rag me about the wiring, I was in the middle of totally replacing it.

Personal preference. I have had several of both and currently have 2 with 4-stroke (Mercury 40hp and Yamaha 115hp). With the exception of small (15hp and under river motors) I hope I never own another 2-stroke. 4-strokes do weigh more, which is a consideration for many such as Mr. Goff.

I love my Tohatsu TLDI she is pretty darn reliable. Guy I bought it from new said he sold them for decades and only has ever had 3 warranty claims.

Our 2 strokes are beast but these 4 strokes are really nice. In fact, just look around, 4 strokes is all that you see. If 4 strokes were not good, local guides would not run them. I love getting those hard looks when I crank my 88 SLP Johnson on a fresh water lake, specifically inland (hill country). They look even harder when I drop the hammer to get on plane.

Well, if you're buying new, you no longer have a choice anyway.

I miss my old boat (96 Wellcraft CC), but I'll never miss that Johnson 135 2 stroke that was hanging off the back end of it. My Lund has a Yamaha 150 4 stroke and I couldn't be happier.
He is truly a sick individual.

More reliable? Lessee...four stroke has valves, camshaft, timing chain, and a whole lot of metal slinging around at 6,000 rpms.
Two stroke? No valves, no valvetrain, basically a air pump with a carb and spark plug.

I've owned several new and used 2 strokes over the years and they were great. Just started running a new Yamaha 115 SHO 4 stroke and like it so far. It starts on first turn of key every time and is very quiet. Time will tell whether it is as good as all my 2 strokes were. I hope it is!
