For rods we use 8ft mh with an abu gacia reel size 7000

It depends on the species of gar you are after. I catch spotted and small long nose gar on a 6’6” ugly stik with a 6500 Abu reel. For bigger long nose and alligator gar I use a bass pro 6’6” GS series musky rod for 45 pound line with 7000 Abu reel. I also catch them Plnor fishing without a reel and with a fly rod, but that is another story. grin

I use an Medium Heavy Ugly Stik Elite for Longnose/Shortnose/Spotted Gar. If I were to target some big Alligator Gar I'd probably buy an Ugly Stik Tiger, I know that's what plenty of other guys use.
