I just finished rewatching the movie Open Range with Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall when I ran across this article about a real life version of Costner's character. I consider myself a pretty good student of the Old West and early California but I had honestly never heard of this guy. Read the story and reflect on the type of men that opened the West. https://gunsmagazine.com/our-experts/one-man-with-courage-is-a-majority/

Some years ago a fella told me his son made a speech at A and M and said men were men and women were glad of it. The backlash was so bad if the kid had not been a football star they would have kicked him out of school

This was a great read. Having grown up reading Louis L'Amour this is what he wrote about and although fiction he based his stories on the character expected of men at the time. Lonesome Dove also embodies the character of men at the time. This was written almost 20 years ago by a guy, Kim du Toit, that used to visit my neighbor for weekend gun shoots (usually been around 10-12 men from all over the US. I won't say he is an alpha as I don't know him well enough but I like the ideation and writing style of this widely circulated piece. for your reading pleasure Kim's timeless classic essay: The Pussification of the Western MaleThe American media brainwashes us all daily. Just notice how often the man, especially the white man, in commercials is made to look weak and like a putz. Most of the guys on this board don't really come across to me as that type of man. Now, I don't know how y'all may react in a crisis but most here value manliness. Texas may be the last bastion of men in the US (well probably not but it is hard to find in many places). Thanks for posting this gdr! Open Range is one of my all time manly old West movies too!

I wouldn’t rule out the men in the northwest to quick some tough characters up in this part of the woods I think there will be men like these stories from all over but not as many as you would expect

I think there are plenty of men still around, we just see the wussies (had another word in mind that rhymes) that the media wants us to see.
by popularizing man buns, pacifists etc. the media works hard to make that seem like the norm and in style way to be, I call bs.
open range is a great movie and duvall one of my all time favorite cowboy actors, costner was great in the movie but some of his stuff is hard to watch.

sounds like one tough dude ---- probably a sink or swim type of mentality back then . Nothing given , everything earned and you had to learn quickly . I was sent as a kid to work my grandparents farm in Iowa , the things my grandfather made me do were crazy . Risky , dangerous and hard . I learned more those summers than I ever did at home. The other movie I like when it comes to " tough " --- is Jeremiah Johnson -- those mountain men were tough as nails --or die .

Costner was much better in True Grit.
