Hi guys I have an old Fenwick rod that belongs to a great man that took me fishing as a kid many years ago. This was his pride and joy rod in the early 80’s. I went to his house to help clean up after hurricane Ike, I found it in the corner missing the tip and a guide missing a insert. I was wondering if there is anyone out there that can fix back to original so I can give it back to him on his 85th birthday. [Linked Image]

IDK about one that old but I have removed tips on current ones by heating the tip up with a lighter to get the epoxy to release and pull tip off, don't get it too hot and damage the rod. You can use hot glue or 2 part epoxy to put a replacement tip on

The old Fenwick rods had tips that were installed the same as they are today. Since the tip is already off, all you need to do is measure the diameter of the end of the rod and buy a tip to fit. They are sized to the nearest 64th of an inch, and an old Fenwick I have from that era took a 5.5 tip, and yours is likely close to that. You want to buy the rod tip cement that is made for this purpose. If you use regular epoxy it might be impossible to get it off if the new tip goes bad. Just heat the end of the glue stick and rub it on the rod, then slide the tip on and let it harden.

Replacing the guide will require some thread. Just cut the old guide thread off and remove it, then use contact cement to position the new guide in place. Wrap the thread around it and take your time to get it even. You don't have to have any equipment to replace one guide; just wrap the thread around the rod. Putting a drop of glue on top of the guide will make the thread sticky and easier to keep straight. Cover the thread with epoxy when you finish. You are talking about 20 minutes of work to repair it.

The key to making it look right will be matching the new tip and guide to the rod. Go to mudhole.com and you can probably find a good match. I would call them to place the order. Their reps are very helpful and will get what you need. Shipping will cost more than the components.

If you can find someone local who builds rods, he can fix it quickly for you, but if you can't find anyone you can easily do it yourself. Good luck!
