I am new to the forum but have been following for a little while. I normally release all fish over 8 pounds. I was wondering what you do when a fish have been deep gut hooked. caught a 15 lb last week that took the hook and cork and about 10 inches of line. i keep the fish but could i have just cut the line and released it.

If it’s deep hooked you just cut the leader. The hook will rust away and it won’t hurt the fish. I have caught a number of fish over the years with rusty hooks that were almost gone.

If the fish is bleeding like a stuck Hog put it in the Ice Chest. I don't like to keep anything over 7 LBS for a Channel and 10 LBS for a Blue.

I try and get the hook out, but it is a judgement call. If you tear up the throat or gills the fish usually won’t live.
